    ABOUT URBAN ARTS:

    Urban Arts is a non-profit organization that helps students explore their creativity and harness technology to defy the odds and define their future.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Community Schools Director (CSD) position will provide oversight, community cultivation and direction to the day-to-day operations for Urban Arts (UA) programs taking place at one of our key partnered Community Schools’ in northern Manhattan. The CSD will be an integral part of the school community, and will report directly to the UA Partner School Director. They will serve as the direct supervisor to the Program Coordinator and provide on the ground support to any Urban Arts educator in order to support their overall efforts to carry out the mission to create a student-driven, productive, healthy, safe space within the school setting. The ideal candidate will have experience in community organizing, have understanding of the immediate community, be bilingual in Spanish, have positive youth development skills and direct practice experience working with youth in a school setting.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES + RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Coordination and Program Supports

    1. Cultivate sustainable “in-kind and fee-for-service” partnerships for the school.
    2. Build strong connections with outside agencies and develop new partnerships with agencies that can bring resources into the school community making access more accessible.
    3. Convene regular meetings with UA staff, service providers, and school team.
    4. Coordinate ongoing training for staff to understand the whole child approach to youth development.
    5. Create a schedule of on-site service provider days and times that will meet the immediate needs of students and families and is aligned with school goals and needs assessments.

    Direct Service

    1. Oversee and support student recruitment, engagement and attendance in all UA related activities within the school community as they are developed.
    2. Oversee and support a referral system for mental health, behavioral health, or academic/attendance supports.
    3. Engage parents and school community through participation in family meetings, workshops and student interventions.
    4. Serve as a point person for messaging between UA, DOE, Grantors, greater community; reaching across institutional cultures and facilitating communication
    5. Work in partnership with the School Leadership Team; lead monthly meetings and additional meetings as needed.
    6. Organize yearly community wide forum with purpose of ongoing needs assessment, engaging the community and external communities and providing positive public relations for the school
    7. Participate in DOE convenings for Community Schools (hosted by NYC DOE)

    Service Impact & Evaluation

    1. Conduct needs assessments and community mapping through face-to-face connections with community members, institutions, and resources. Monitor over time to ensure program offerings address emerging and evolving needs.
    2. Report on program progress and improvement using data insights.
    3. Collect and monitor data using New Visions or/and other school-based data collection tools.
    4. Manage Google Doc folders containing all documentation related to community school initiatives, ensuring availability for site visits and public relations.
    5. Collaborate with the Program Director to develop quarterly and annual work plans.

    Fiscal Management

    1. Collaborate with the Director of Partner Schools, school leadership, and grant Program Managers to create and manage the budget.
    2. Manage the site-based budget: obtain quotes, place orders, and maintain Urban Arts financial management tools.
    3. Ensure all budget lines are fully expended and properly tracked according to UA and DOE fiscal guidelines.
    4. Update the budget tracker, submit receipts promptly, and maintain continuous communication with the finance department to meet fiscal deadlines on a timely basis
    5. Act as the liaison between Urban Arts and the school for all fiscal matters.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Experience with the New York City public school system and / or non-profit sector.
    • Ability to work effectively with school-aged youth, educators, families, and communities.
    • Demonstrated ability in grassroots community outreach and organizing, leadership training, and youth development is desired
    • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
    • Bilingual skills in Spanish.
    • Minimum 5-years professional experience.
    • Experience in program management and coordination.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
    • Strong time management and multitasking competence.
    • Strong commitment to arts and technology education.
    • DOE fingerprinting, background clearances.
