The Educational Coordinator develops, organizes, and implements inclusive, mission-driven educational programs for diverse audiences, including youth, adults, and families. This role emphasizes nature-based learning and family wellness, focusing on early childhood (ages 0–5) and community engagement. Working under the direction of Garden Leadership, the Coordinator ensures programs align with organizational goals while supporting outreach, volunteer engagement, and program sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, coordinate, and implement educational programs, workshops, and events for preschool-aged children, youth, adults, and families
- Oversee and support the Garden’s docent program, including recruitment, training, coordination, and scheduling in collaboration with the Volunteer Director
- Monitor and guide Youth and Adult Program Committees, including curriculum development and program structure
- Plan and facilitate docent trainings and educational classes
- Coordinate program logistics, including materials, registration, volunteers, and scheduling
- Manage program budgets and ensure activities operate within established guidelines
- Conduct outreach to schools, early childhood care providers, families, and community organizations throughout SLO County
- Build and maintain partnerships with local organizations focused on education and family services, connecting them with Garden resources
- Support marketing and communications efforts, including outreach and program promotion
- Supervise volunteers and interns as needed
Work Environment and Shifts
- Combination of office and outdoor work in a garden setting
- May include weekends or occasional evenings depending on programming needs
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, biology, or related field, or equivalent experience
- Experience in classroom and/or outdoor education, with a focus on nature-based learning
- Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational programming for diverse audiences
- Strong collaboration skills and experience working with volunteers, educators, families, and community organizations
- Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills
Skills & Abilities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to present information clearly to a variety of audiences
- Problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with limited supervision
- Detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills
- Experience with marketing or graphic design is a plus
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Frequent walking, bending, and working on uneven terrain
- A combination of indoor and outdoor work in a garden setting
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
A valid California Class “C” driver’s license or ability to obtain one. Valid Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 6 months of appointment to position.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of Mediterranean plants, Canva, Wordpress, Microsoft Office and Google suite experience, and marketing training is preferable.
