We're seeking a visionary email leader to transform our digital communications and drive unprecedented impact for our mission. As the Director, Email Strategy & Operations, you'll revolutionize our email channel, elevating it from a tactical tool to a strategic powerhouse that connects with our community in meaningful, measurable ways. This role demands a highly analytical leader who not only understands email performance but understands the principles of donor stewardship and supporter engagement.

You'll establish a center of excellence that sets new standards for engagement, conversion, and supporter loyalty in the non-profit space.
This role operates as both a strategic leader and a hands-on practitioner, particularly during high-volume periods and while building best-in-class foundations across the channel.

Essential Functions:
- Strategic Ownership & Integrated Marketing
- Channel Ownership: Define and manage the end-to-end strategic roadmap for the email channel, holding accountability for all channel KPIs.
- Donor Stewardship & Lifecycle: Develop and optimize email workflows focused on donor stewardship, subscriber retention and re-engagement, and ensuring personalized communication paths for first-time donors, recurring givers, and lapsed segments.
- Portfolio Strategy: Act as the primary email channel advisor for the Integrated Marketing team. Work in partnership with other members of the Digital Team to develop tailored email strategies for key organizational portfolios and audiences (e.g., Young Adults, Women’s Philanthropy, Major Gifts).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner actively with Content, Development, and Integrated Marketing teams to synchronize email efforts with other channels, ensuring a cohesive and compelling supporter experience.
- Translate integrated marketing objectives into specific, measurable email KPIs
- Analytical & Performance Reporting
- Data Translation: Perform a deep-dive analysis of email performance, providing regular, concise performance reports to leadership and stakeholders.
- A/B Testing: Design, prioritize, and manage A/B testing roadmap focusing on subject lines, preview text, send times, sender names, and basic structural layouts to optimize performance.
- Deliverability & Health: Own the health and deliverability of the email list, proactively monitoring inbox placement, spam complaints, and unsubscribe trends.
- Operations Management & Mentorship
- Subject Line Excellence: Write high-impact and segmented subject lines and preview text to maximize open rates and set accurate expectations for the email content.
- Execution Oversight: Oversee and quality-check the technical build and deployment of all campaigns.
- Team Leadership & Performance Management: Directly lead, manage, and mentor a high performing team. Set performance goals, drive professional development, and ensure the team operates as a high-performing, results-driven unit.
- Hands-On Execution: Build, test, and deploy emails and automated workflows within our ESP (HubSpot), ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timely delivery across high-volume campaigns.
Other Responsibilities
- Partner with the content strategy and comms teams to proactively respond to crisis communications requests after hours or on weekends when needed. This may include email deployment.

Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Marketing, Communications, Data Science, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Master’s degree or relevant professional certifications (e.g., specific ESP certifications, Google Analytics certification) are a strong plus.
Experience:
- 57
- years of progressive experience in digital marketing, with at least 3 years dedicated specifically to email marketing strategy and operations.
- 3+ years in a senior individual contributor or supervisory role, demonstrating the ability to lead projects and mentor staff.
- Proven experience developing and executing multi-year email roadmaps that align with CJP's digital transformation roadmap.
- Demonstrated non-profit experience
- Must be comfortable serving in both strategic and executional capacities, including hands-on email builds and troubleshooting.
- Proven ability to manage timelines and competing priorities effectively.
Skills/Competencies:
- Expert-level knowledge of an enterprise-grade marketing automation platform. HubSpot experience preferred.
- Salesforce NPC experience preferred.
- Strong proficiency in Google Analytics (or similar web analytics tools) to measure end-to-end email campaign performance, traffic attribution, and donation conversions.
- Solid understanding of HTML/CSS specifically as it applies to email rendering and deliverability best practices.
- Exceptional analytical and quantitative skills with the ability to translate complex performance data into clear, actionable business insights for non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven expertise in designing A/B testing methodologies and deriving strategic conclusions from test results.
- Deep understanding of non-profit operations, donor lifecycle management, and best practices for digital donor stewardship and member retention. Demonstrated ability to write compelling, high-performing subject lines that maximize open rates while maintaining brand integrity.
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence strategy across integrated marketing, content, and fundraising departments.
- A proactive, problem-solving mindset with superb attention to detail.
Working Conditions:
- Hybrid Work Schedule: CJP staff follow a hybrid work model. On-site work is required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, while remote work is an option on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays with occasional in-person meetings on those days.
- Physical Requirements: This role involves remaining in a stationary position, often sitting or standing for prolonged periods, primarily working at a computer. Staff need to be able to carry a laptop and bag to and from the office.
