    Role Overview

    The Marketing & Communications Manager is responsible for leveraging marketing and communications strategies and platforms to increase Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area’s visibility, build trust and relationships, acquire and steward donors, and inspire meaningful engagement with the organization. The Marketing & Communications Manager will strengthen BBBSBA’s brand reputation and awareness, deepen engagement with key audiences, and ultimately drive philanthropic support, mentor recruitment, and interest among youth and families in BBBSBA’s programs.

    Hybrid 2+ days – Office in Oakland, CA

    Occasional travel throughout 10 Bay Area counties.

    Key Responsibilities

    Brand Leadership

    • Lead the development, implementation, and adherence to BBBSBA brand architecture, guidelines, and standards.
    • Develop a focused and strategic messaging plan that is reflected consistently across all BBBSBA communications.
    • Establish creative and graphic design direction for the organization; design and create organizational promotional materials, presentations, and videos; identify and manage relationships with qualified vendors and consultants; and manage the creative review and approval process in coordination with other teams.
    • Manage the organization’s creative asset, branding, and collateral and establish processes that optimize cross-team collaboration.

    Donor & Volunteer Communications

    • Develop, manage, and execute multi-channel communication strategies, workflows, and annual calendars aligned with engagement goals for targeted donor, prospect, volunteer, and stakeholder audiences. Integrate program and event communications, donor stewardship, appeals, and special-feature storytelling throughout the year.
    • Create compelling, audience-specific fundraising communications aligned with Development strategies, including segmented direct mail and digital appeals, donor stewardship communications, the annual impact report, major gift materials, and Reach BIG campaign collateral.
    • Partner with the Programs team to identify and amplify compelling stories of impact, promoting programs, Bigs, Littles, volunteers, and mission outcomes in ways that strengthen BBBSBA visibility, reputation, and community engagement.
    • Lead local activation of BBBS national corporate partnerships, translating national opportunities into effective Bay Area engagement strategies and project-managing implementation across internal and external stakeholders.
    • Bring an authentic understanding of the communities BBBSBA serves and demonstrate strong cultural competency in developing communications and outreach strategies that resonate with diverse audiences, strengthen community relationships, and support targeted volunteer and Big recruitment.

    Digital Communications

    • Develop a comprehensive social media strategy, including content priorities, scheduling, partner content curation, and audience analysis.
    • Create social media content workflows and sharing frameworks, including photo-gathering practices for departments and organizational staff and clear expectations for social media sharing.
    • Stay current on digital trends across marketing, communications, online giving, and third-party giving platforms; make relevant recommendations and identify opportunities for collaboration.
    • Lead the ongoing evolution of the BBBSBA website to strengthen engagement with supporters and key audiences.
    • Administer organization-owned digital platforms, including social media, the website, online review platforms, and other relevant channels.

    Media Relations

    • Develop a proactive earned media and outreach strategy and create story pitches that reinforce the organization’s key messages.
    • Lead all aspects of preparation for media interviews, including determining scope, securing permissions, preparing interviewees, developing key messages, and managing on-site coordination.
    • Develop and lead the organization’s crisis communications plan, working with organizational leadership to triage and respond to media relations issues involving sensitive situations or crises.

    Performance & Budget Management

    • Develop and manage marketing and communications budgets.
    • Establish, track, analyze, and report on key performance metrics related to marketing and communications strategies, using insights to inform future strategy and resource allocation.

    Core Competencies

    • Strategic Communications & Storytelling: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop compelling narratives and adapt messaging for diverse audiences, objectives, and channels.
    • Digital Marketing & Audience Engagement: Strong knowledge of social media strategy, content development, digital communications, and audience engagement, with the ability to use digital platforms to build awareness and inspire action.
    • Fundraising & Donor Communications: Strong understanding of donor communications, fundraising marketing, stewardship, and audience segmentation, with the ability to develop communications that support donor acquisition, retention, engagement, and philanthropic growth.
    • Creative & Project Management: Proficiency with relevant creative and digital marketing tools, including Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, email marketing platforms (e.g., Luminate), and content management systems. Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, stakeholders, and cross-functional projects. Ability to influence and collaborate effectively without direct authority.

    Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • 3+ years of relevant experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or a related field.
    • Experience engaging effectively with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
    • Demonstrated ability to interact comfortably and professionally with members of the public, community partners, volunteers, donors, and staff.
