Location: Appalachian Highlands Region (Bristol and surrounding areas)
Works Closely With: Senior Program Coordinator and Project Manager
Position Overview
The Program Coordinator (PC) focuses on direct youth engagement. The PC works closely with the Senior Program Coordinator to prepare and execute presentations/workshops at area schools, focused on high schools but reaching middle school age through school and/or afterschool programming. The position requires regular review of curriculums, reviewing and adapting facilitator guides for hands-on classroom activities, and working together to present effective programming.
Current hiring is for a VADMV–Virginia Dept of Motor Vehicles grant.
Key Responsibilities:
Classroom & Presentation Support
- Assists in facilitating the evidence-based Impact Teen Drivers: What Do You Consider Lethal? curriculum and possible other evidence-based or evidence promising programs.
- Supports the setup and operation of interactive tools, including the Fatal Vision® Goggles and the Just Drive Virtual Reality (VR) Simulator during school visits and community events.
- Assists with managing attendance logs and distributing pre- and post-presentation student evaluation surveys.
Event Support:
- Collaborate with the Senior Program Coordinator to plan and lead interactive educational events at regional schools and community venues.
- Prepare materials, set up exhibits, and engage with participants during outreach events to promote traffic safety education.
Event Logistics & Community Engagement
- Coordinates scheduling with area schools by working with classroom teachers, particularly health sciences, HOSA Clubs and Drivers Education. Involves initial contact, planning, continued communication, and follow up with thank yous and evaluation data.
- Transports and sets up event materials (technology, educational literature, display banners, and interactive tools) using rolling carts/collapsible wagons as needed.
- Represents Buckle Up Appalachia at local outreach opportunities and cultivates relationships with regional schools and community partners.
- Works with BUA staff to evaluate programs that may be potential for future or additional programming.
Administrative & Data Management
- Maintains organized records of school partnerships, contacts, scheduling, event outcomes, and survey feedback using provided computer and Google products, spreadsheets and documents.
- Works with Project Manager for compiling workshop evaluation data.
Training & Professional Development
- Completes required program training, including Impact Teen Drivers, simulators and other tools.
- Participates in relevant traffic safety webinars and professional development opportunities to stay up to date on best practices.
- Participates in APA organizational opportunities such as Youth Networking Alliance.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- Education: Associate degree or bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Non-Profit Management, Public Health, Business Administration, Education, or a related field preferred (High School Diploma or equivalent required with relevant experience).
- Experience: 2+ years of experience in event coordination, youth education, or outreach roles preferred, especially in road safety, public health, teaching or community-based programs.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong communication and public engagement skills, with the ability to interact effectively with diverse groups.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace / Microsoft Office, basic grant reporting portals, and digital communication tools.
- Basic proficiency in social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), Google Office Suite, and event management tools.
- Enthusiastic team player with a passion for community service, working with teens, and traffic safety.
- Collaborative mindset with a strong commitment to community safety and non-profit service.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, with a flexible and proactive attitude.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Type: Part-time position with flexible scheduling (requires occasional evening or weekend hours for events or board meetings). The role involves a mix of remote and BUA office work and on-site school presentations and networking responsibilities.
- Location: Hybrid working environment combining remote work, office time, and regional travel, offices located at 100 Ash Street #2 Bristol TN.
- Travel: Regional travel throughout the Appalachian Highlands Region (Bristol and surrounding areas) is required.
- Physical Demand: Ability to set up event materials, transport program supplies, and lift up to 25 pounds.
Hours and Salary: Part time, averaging 10 hours per week, total gross annual salary, $ 13,000.
