About New York Housing Conference
New York Housing Conference is a nonprofit affordable housing policy and advocacy organization focused on policy and resources at the City, State and Federal levels. We support decent affordable housing for all New Yorkers by analyzing public policy, educating and convening stakeholders, and building effective advocacy coalitions.
About NYHC’s Communications Work
NYHC is a prominent player in public discussions about New York City’s housing crisis. We advocate for resources and improved policy for affordable housing development and preservation. We regularly talk to the media – including print and TV. We prepare analyses and comment on the latest issues and share data and information. We also lead coalitions, often sharing the perspective of the affordable housing community on major policies.
About the Director of Communications
NYHC is seeking a communications leader to join our small but mighty team that can lead communications to help advance our mission including earned media; communications to partners/funders; brand management and social media.
Responsibilities
- Oversee earned media strategies and press relations to amplify our advocacy including maintaining relationships with reporters, editors, and producers to secure coverage of housing issues. This includes reaching out to reporters to share our latest reports or our availability to comment on developing stories.
- Prepare press releases, statements, talking points and Op-Eds from NYHC and our partners.
- Coordinate messaging for advocacy campaigns and work collaboratively with coalition partners.
- Develop and execute digital strategy and brand messaging to advance NYHC's mission. Build NYHC’s social media presence.
- Keep partners and funders informed through fresh and informative content on social media, regular newsletters and website.
- Grant writing as needed.
We are looking for someone with prior experience in a press or communications role in advocacy or government with experience or interest in policy.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in communications, media, public affairs, or a related field, with a record of securing earned media
- Demonstrated experience managing press outreach and relationships with reporters
- Strong writing skills with the ability to produce press releases, talking points, and digital content under deadline
- A strong relationship builder — comfortable developing and maintaining connections with reporters, coalition partners, spokespeople, and colleagues
- Proficiency with social media platforms, strategy and content
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with the New York media and political landscape
- Experience in advocacy, nonprofit, or campaign communications
- Knowledge of and interest in affordable housing policy
