    Position Summary

    Wright to Read has been providing services in the city of Alexandria for over 47 years. The program serves Alexandria City Public School elementary-aged children who need additional literacy support by pairing students one-on-one with a volunteer tutor-mentor. These matches typically last at least three years on average, and the strength of the relationship developed between student and volunteer usually leads to continued involvement and engagement in the program through middle and high school.

    The Program Manager (PM) will play a vital role in maintaining and advancing the successful operations of the Wright to Read program. She/he will work closely with the Director to develop, coordinate, and facilitate key program components. She/he is also expected to take the lead on executing some program elements such as driving enrollment to the flagship tutor-mentor program, as well as leading the efforts for continuous student and program assessment.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Coordinate and implement the assessment efforts of all students in Wright to Read programs, via use of tools such as DRA3 and DIBELS, including the direct administration of these assessments.
    • Directly supervises Literacy Specialist in ensuring annual assessments occur and works with Data Analyst to report program outcomes
    • With the Literacy Specialist, research and implement literacy curricula and tools, resources, and activities to be utilized by tutor-mentors
    • With Director, executes strategic recruitment strategies to maintain the number of students/families served through the program’s various models (flagship, site-based, early literacy, and WTR Club) and maintain program participant data
    • Support the creation and implementation of enrichment events for program participants, including activities such as field trips, family literacy and engagement events and communication, and mid/end-of-year celebrations.
    • Executes strategies to recruit, train, and support volunteer tutor-mentors in the flagship program, including implementation of annual events such as our Volunteer Workshop, Knowledge Shares, and Summer Book Club
    • Leads efforts to match students with volunteers and launch and nurture relationships between mentors and their respective mentee and family
    • Works with the Director to implement a communication plan with volunteers and families that supports student engagement and progress
    • Directly manages hourly employees implementing site-based programs (Site Facilitator, Intern)

    Other responsibilities

    • Assists Program Director and Chief Development Officer with periodic grant writing responsibilities by providing content and contributing to writing when requested and necessary
    • Develop relationships and maintain contact with both internal and external stakeholders (e.g. volunteer tutor-mentors, ACPS staff and faculty, Library staff, etc.)
    • With Director, monitor spending on program activities and make recommendations on program expenditures
    • Represent Wright to Read as part of Alexandria Mentoring Partnership, Alexandria Literacy Initiative, and other external partners and city workgroups as needed
    • Participate in occasional meetings, as well as evenings/weekend activities to support the program
    • Perform other duties as requested by the Supervisor

    Required Qualifications

    • Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree
    • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communications skills
    • Volunteer management skills
    • Demonstrated creativity and evidence of planning and executing interactive experiences for students, elementary through high school
    • Demonstrated prior experience preparing and conducting presentations and reports for a variety of audiences
    • Demonstrated ability to collect, organize, and analyze program data for reporting purposes
    • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, specifically) and online platforms/tools (Zoom, Google Drive, SurveyMonkey, Canva)
    • Prior experience managing program staff, operations, and delivery of program services
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work independently and collaborate with others

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Familiarity with a second language besides English.
    • Familiarity/proficiency in administering literacy assessments.
    • Experience working in racially, ethnically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse communities.
    • Demonstrated commitment to advancing educational achievement, lifelong learning, and positive social development for children, teens, and adults.

    Physical Requirements:

    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be mobile in an office, school, and various community environments and able to use standard office equipment
    • Must be willing and able to travel to and from office, event sites and other in-person locations
    • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

    • Partial tuition reimbursement, paid training, eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, and access to an employer-paid financial health and wellness app
    • Pet insurance for your furry or feathered friends

    Location:

    • Candidate must live within driving distance of our headquarters in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

    Salary:

    • The range for this position is $55,000-$58,000 per year and is commensurate with experience
