Documenters Program Assistant - Job Posting
inewsource is an award-winning community-focused nonprofit newsroom dedicated to improving lives in the San Diego region and beyond through impactful, investigative and accountability journalism. We are unique among San Diego news providers in the way we involve community members in our work. We provide a public service through our commitment to investigative reporting, community-centered storytelling and stories that inform and empower.
In 2023 we brought the Documenters Program to San Diego, a program that makes local government more accountable and transparent by training and paying community members to attend government meetings. By empowering community members in this way, Documenters and inewsource reporters shed light on important issues, like the city of San Diego’s intentions to remove remote comments from public meetings and National City’s plans to approve a project for a fuel transfer station. Both plans were scrapped following our coverage and community outcry. The Documenters program also fosters civically engaged communities throughout San Diego County through collaborative work and helps develop student journalists.
We’re looking for a Documenters Program Assistant to help drive the successful community program inewsource has built. The program assistant will help coordinate and develop the Documenters notes that aid community and accountability reporting, contribute to the development of the program’s bond with communities through training workshops and community engagement events, help tell the Documenters story through different forms of communication and help community members develop important skills.
The Documenters Assistant should have excellent communication and organizational skills that allow them to connect with community members and help build a Documenters community, as well as coordinate with inewsource staff and program partners. The candidate will understand the value of community engagement and collaborative work to inform communities about their local government. Experience with or knowledge of local government is a plus. Other necessary skills include a strong ability to multitask and coordinate multiple projects, ability to use basic administrative tools, copywriting skills and experience with content editing software, such as Canva or Adobe.
Diversity is a core value at inewsource – we believe that a variety of experiences and vantage points lead to better, more nuanced journalism and a better-informed community. If you have lived experience or have worked and reported with diverse communities, we would love to hear from you. We will only consider candidates located in or willing to relocate to the San Diego area.
