    EYCEJ Independent Contractor Position Description

    TITLE: Compost Hub Coordinator

    REPORTS TO: Policy Analyst / Co-Executive Directors

    Salary & Hours: EYCEJ has a flat pay rate of $36/hour, to be paid monthly upon receiving invoice. It is expected that the Bell Compost Hub Coordinator will work 10 hours per week with the potential to increase up to 25 hours per week.

    This is a part-time, short-term Independent Contract Position from 3/1/2026 - 5/31/2026 (possibility of extension), which does not include benefits or paid time off.

    GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Compost Hub Coordinator will conduct: Outreach and engagement with community members at the local Farmers Market and larger Southeast Los Angeles community about EYCEJ and EYCEJ’s Zero Waste work. Coordinate EYCEJ’s Compost Hub Sunday volunteer days in Bell, including building relationships and organizing with EYCEJ’s members and larger community. Maintenance of the compost hub includes but is not limited to receiving, layering, and processing food scraps, turning/watering compost piles, recording metrics, and coordinating mulch pick up for Sunday volunteer days.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    OUTREACH AND ORGANIZING

    Outreach and organize health and environmental issues involving zero waste facing the local Southeast Los Angeles community.

    • Build genuine relationships with community members and their knowledge around EYCEJ’s mission of composting and zero waste.
    • Travel and coordinate pick-up and drop-offs of food scraps at the local Farmers Market every Wednesday (subject to change) from 8:30am to 1:00pm and share about EYCEJ (Zero waste, compost, programming, local monthly meetings and events, etc.)
    • Recruit community members to participate in Sunday volunteer days.
    • Maintain a database of community members and volunteers.
    • Distribute compost when available to community members dropping off food scraps.
    • Travel to pick-up and drop-off buckets from/to the Compost Hub on Wednesdays. Wash buckets before tabling at the local Farmers Market, if needed.
    • Coordinate with the local Farmers Market Coordinator.
    • Travel to pick up and drop off mulch to the compost hub site as needed.
    • Coordinate Sunday volunteer days: Communicate with the Compost Hub host. Identify the goal of volunteer days and volunteer roles. Outreach to EYCEJ organizers, when needed.Volunteer Day Set-up and Close-out: Ensuring supplies are available, set- up stations, tracking metrics, purchase snacks & water for volunteers and compost members, cleaning space and setting up volunteer stations, etc.
    • Maintain the compost hub in between volunteer days, if needed: turn/transfer piles, water piles, process food scraps, as needed.
    • Coordinate and assist with EYCEJ Communication Staff to post on our social media of volunteer day schedule, workshops, events, progress/updates, etc.
    • Assist in the creation of educational materials related to composting and zero waste.
    • Assist in the creation and facilitation of educational workshops and presentations.
    • Track metrics of organic waste (food scraps) during volunteer days, and maintain the database.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Demonstrate knowledge of composting and zero waste.
    • Strong commitment to social justice.
    • Integrity and strong work ethic.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish), excellent written and oral communication.
    • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required, good driving record and valid auto insurance coverage.
    • Work well in a team-oriented environment and ability to work independently, managing multiple priorities.
    • Commitment to developing leaders and our mission.

    PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

    • Ability to work manually with organic waste (food scraps), outside and around insects (The presence of insects is normal during different stages of composting.)
    • Perform manual labor.
    • Proper and safe use of hand and power tools and equipment in maintenance work.
    • Ability to lift/carry/drag/push 50+lbs.
    • Ability to reach, bend, stoop (ex. pick-up and drop-off buckets of food scraps, bins of mulch/compost, etc)
    • Ability to operate tools, equipment and/or materials.
    • Work outside in all weather conditions (except rain and wildfires).

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Experience in composting and knowledge of zero waste is required.
