New York Restoration Project (NYRP) believes that access to nature is a fundamental human right. We work to ensure that all New Yorkers have equitable access to green space. For over 30 years, NYRP has invested in and stewarded parks and gardens throughout the city’s five boroughs to strengthen communities.

    Position Summary

NYRP is seeking an Urban Agriculture Coordinator (Coordinator), reporting to the Director of Urban Agriculture & Public Programming, to help implement all facets of the NYRP Urban Agriculture Program. The Coordinator will serve as the team lead for stewardship of the NYRP Teaching Garden, which includes 22 large raised beds, a three-bin compost system, a mushroom log yard, and an edible food forest area. The Coordinator will also oversee programming in the Teaching Garden, including regular community volunteer days, visits from urban agriculture partners, and other more advanced training. The Coordinator may be called on to assist with educational programming at partner sites (i.e. community gardens, school gardens, urban farms, and growing spaces affiliated with community-based organizations) that the NYRP Urban Agriculture Program works with. They will also support general program operations, including work on a citywide Public Workshop series, as well as larger departmental initiatives and events.

To be successful in this role, a candidate must have a strong background in farming, as well as significant experience in education and/or public programming. The work is relationship-centered and hands-on, so the Coordinator should be eager to get their hands dirty and to build meaningful connections with NYRP’s urban ag constituents. The Urban Ag team is small and highly collaborative, but the dispersed nature of the program means that the Coordinator will be called on to work independently and will need to balance multiple projects at once. Candidates should be skilled time managers, excellent communicators, and detail-oriented individuals. The Coordinator will be required to help collect materials and supplies from, and deliver them to various sites using NYRP vehicles, so a valid and clean driver’s license is an absolute must.

    Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Perform basic stewardship tasks in the Teaching Garden, including planning and planting, weeding and watering, pest and disease management, mushroom log maintenance, trellising and fertilizing, composting, and more
    • Implement programming in the Teaching Garden, including community volunteer days, site visits from partners, and other special events
    • Take initiative to ensure that the Teaching Garden is a welcoming, clean, and vibrant space
    • Sustain strong relationships and lines of communication with partners, Teaching Garden constituents, and other program stakeholders
    • Create signage & educational materials to enrich programming and elevate the pedagogy of the Teaching Garden and other programming
    • Support the delivery of trainings and other technical assistance – independently and in collaboration with the Urban Agriculture Manager – at partner sites (i.e. community gardens, school gardens, urban farms, and other community-based growing sites)
    • Collect and deliver program materials and supplies (i.e. straw bales, spent mushroom blocks, etc.) using NYRP vehicles
    • Document the work by taking photos, entering info into internal databases, and contributing to other record-keeping systems
    • Help keep program equipment and supplies organized and well-maintained
    • Collaborate on departmental initiatives and larger events, including a Plant Giveaway, a Fall Festival, and more

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • 3-5 years of experience working in agriculture/farming, community gardening, and/or food justice
    • Background in education, especially agricultural, environmental, or experiential education, and/or public programming
    • Direct experience with underrepresented black, indigenous, and people of color communities (personal, lived experience or professional, work experience)
    • A valid and clean NY state driver’s license (mandatory)
    • Able to lift 40 lbs; embraces the physical nature of this work
    • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions
    • Excellent communication skills (bilingual Spanish, Chinese, or Bengali preferred)
    • Flexible team player, capable of both working independently and collaborating with colleagues
    • Organized, enthusiastic, and a resourceful problem-solver who is eager to learn
