Salary Range: $60,000–$65,000
The Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance is seeking a Studio & Facilities Manager to oversee the day-to-day operation, maintenance, safety, and technical readiness of our studios, rehearsal spaces, performance spaces, and shared facilities.
This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the operation of the Center’s new 30,000-square-foot home in the Paramount Building in Times Square, supporting the work of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Martha Graham School, Martha Graham Resources, visiting artists, staff, and renters.
The ideal candidate is organized, hands-on, resourceful, and comfortable taking ownership of problems and finding practical solutions. This person will work across departments and with artists, faculty, staff, vendors, contractors, and building management to ensure that our spaces are safe, functional, welcoming, and ready to support a wide range of activities.
Studio & Facility Operations
- Oversee the day-to-day operation and readiness of the Center’s studios, offices, and common areas.
- Ensure spaces are clean, safe, functional, properly equipped, and ready for classes, rehearsals, performances, events, and rentals.
- Establish and maintain systems for daily inspections, room setup, opening and closing procedures, and facility readiness.
- Coordinate the physical needs of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Martha Graham School, administrative staff, visiting artists, and renters.
- Monitor the condition of dance floors, mirrors, lighting, sound equipment, furniture, fixtures, and other studio equipment.
- Identify facility needs and ensure that maintenance and repairs are addressed promptly.
Technical Direction – School & Rentals
- Serve as the primary technical contact for the Martha Graham School and rental activities, providing on-site technical support for showings, technical rehearsals, performances, and other events with technical requirements.
- Assess the technical and facility requirements of classes, rehearsals, events, and rentals and determine appropriate equipment, setup, staffing, and support.
- Work directly with School faculty, guest artists, renters, and visiting companies to understand and fulfill their technical and facility needs.
- Coordinate technical setups, technical rehearsals, event changes, and breakdowns to ensure activities run smoothly and on schedule.
- Provide basic technical support during School events, workshops, performances, and rentals, coordinating with production personnel when additional technical support is required.
- Serve as the point person for technical questions and troubleshooting during rentals and School activities.
- Review rental requests and technical riders, identify potential issues, and communicate requirements and limitations to renters in advance.
- Ensure that equipment and technical systems are properly maintained, safely operated, and returned to their appropriate condition following use.
Maintenance, Vendors & Building Management
- Serve as a primary day-to-day contact for building management, maintenance providers, contractors, and facility-related vendors.
- Coordinate routine maintenance, repairs, service calls, deliveries, and inspections.
- Obtain and review estimates and coordinate vendor and contractor access to the facility.
- Monitor work to ensure that repairs and services are completed properly and on schedule.
- Maintain records of service agreements, warranties, inspections, repairs, and other facility documentation.
- Escalate significant building or operational issues to the Deputy Executive Director.
Safety & Compliance
- Help maintain a safe environment for dancers, students, faculty, staff, artists, renters, and visitors.
- Conduct regular walkthroughs and identify potential safety or maintenance concerns.
- Maintain and communicate procedures related to emergencies, accidents, evacuation, building access, and other safety matters.
- Coordinate required inspections, certifications, and facility-related compliance requirements.
- Work with building management and senior staff to address safety and compliance issues.
Equipment, Inventory & Supplies
- Maintain an organized inventory of studio, facility, technical, and operational equipment and supplies.
- Monitor the condition and appropriate use of equipment and furnishings.
- Coordinate purchasing and replacement of supplies and equipment within approved budgets.
- Establish effective systems for storage and organization throughout the facility.
- Identify opportunities to improve the functionality and organization of the Center’s spaces.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in facilities management, studio management, technical production, performing arts, theater, dance, or a related field.
- Experience working in a busy environment with multiple users, schedules, and competing priorities.
- Strong organizational, project-management, technical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to coordinate renovations, capital improvements, installations, or construction projects.
- Hands-on and proactive approach to managing facilities and resolving problems.
- Experience working with vendors, contractors, technicians, and service providers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with artists, students, faculty, staff, renters, and other stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Google Workspace and the ability to learn scheduling and facility-management systems.
- Ability to work with a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends based on performances, events, rentals, and other facility needs.
- Experience in a dance, theater, or performing-arts environment is strongly preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Experience managing dance studios, rehearsal spaces, theaters, or other performing-arts facilities.
- Familiarity with dance flooring, Marley, mirrors, lighting, sound systems, audiovisual equipment, and studio technology.
- Experience providing technical direction or production support for classes, workshops, performances, events, or rentals.
- Knowledge of NYC building operations, fire/life-safety procedures, public assembly requirements, or related regulations.
- An aptitude in supervising staff, freelance technicians, or temporary personnel.
