About the Program and Position Summary

The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson), a nonpartisan global security think tank located in Washington, DC, seeks a Staff Accountant. Reporting to the Accounting Director, the Staff Accountant will be a key part of the finance team, supporting the Accounting Director with an array of financial functions.

We seek an energetic, organized, detail-oriented, customer-focused, proactive, innovative individual who can excel in a dynamic environment.

Responsibilities:

• Perform general accounting functions;
• Prepare journal entries for review by the Accounting Director;
• Track international wires as needed to ensure successful payment, including interacting with bank personnel, vendors and staff;
• Prepare invoices as needed;
• Prepare multiple cost allocation schedules monthly;
• Assist the Accounting Director in research as needed;
• Assist in the preparation of the annual financial audit and intermittent programmatic audits;
• Assist in the preparation of the 990 and related activities;
• Ensure adherence to established procedures and internal controls;
• Ensure compliance with sponsoring agency regulations;
• Support the Accounting Director with various other activities and projects, as needed;
• Act as a backup for various accounting functions as needed; and
• Accounts Payable/Receivable.

Qualifications – required:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting/ CPA or equivalent work experience;
• Meticulous organizational skills and attention to detail; and
• Ability to be flexible, work in a fast-paced environment and respond to requests promptly.

Qualifications – preferred:

• Knowledge of nonprofit accounting requirements, GAAP and Uniform Guidance;
• Knowledge of foreign exchange transactions; and
• Intermediate Excel skills and familiarity with QuickBooks Online or similar accounting system.
