About Young People’s Chorus of New York City
The Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) is a multicultural youth chorus internationally renowned for its artistic excellence, diversity, and commitment to youth development through music education. Founded by Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, a MacArthur Fellow and Musical America’s 2018 Educator of the Year, founded YPC, which provides children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with high-quality choral training and performance opportunities.
YPC currently operates with an annual budget of approximately $7.5 million and also oversees the finances of YPC National, a related organization with a budget of under $1 million.
Position Overview
YPC seeks a hands-on Nonprofit Controller / Senior Accountant to oversee the organization’s accounting operations and supervise the finance team.
This role is ideal for an experienced nonprofit accounting professional who enjoys improving accounting processes, mentoring staff, and ensuring the organization maintains accurate financial records and strong internal controls.
The Controller supervises the Finance Manager, a staff accountant, and a part-time outsourced bookkeeper, and works collaboratively with an external nonprofit accounting advisor who assists the organization with audit preparation and complex accounting matters.
This position reports jointly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Executive Administrator.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting Oversight and Financial Reporting
Technical Accounting and Month-End Close
Prepare or review more complex journal entries, including: releases from donor restrictions, depreciation and fixed asset accounting, prepaid expenses, investment activity and reconciliations, intercompany activity with YPC National
Maintain key balance sheet schedules, including:
Net assets with and without donor restrictions, fixed assets and depreciation schedules, prepaid expenses, loans, and other liabilities
Team Leadership
Banking and Reconciliations
Grants and Restricted Funds Accounting
Audit and Compliance
Systems and Process Improvement
