About Young People’s Chorus of New York City

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) is a multicultural youth chorus internationally renowned for its artistic excellence, diversity, and commitment to youth development through music education. Founded by Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez, a MacArthur Fellow and Musical America’s 2018 Educator of the Year, founded YPC, which provides children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with high-quality choral training and performance opportunities.

YPC currently operates with an annual budget of approximately $7.5 million and also oversees the finances of YPC National, a related organization with a budget of under $1 million.

Position Overview

YPC seeks a hands-on Nonprofit Controller / Senior Accountant to oversee the organization’s accounting operations and supervise the finance team.

This role is ideal for an experienced nonprofit accounting professional who enjoys improving accounting processes, mentoring staff, and ensuring the organization maintains accurate financial records and strong internal controls.

The Controller supervises the Finance Manager, a staff accountant, and a part-time outsourced bookkeeper, and works collaboratively with an external nonprofit accounting advisor who assists the organization with audit preparation and complex accounting matters.

This position reports jointly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Executive Administrator.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting Oversight and Financial Reporting

• Maintain accurate general ledger and accounting records in accordance with nonprofit GAAP (ASC 958).
• Oversee the monthly close process in coordination with the Finance Manager.
• Review and approve journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by accounting staff.
• Prepare and review monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Prepare draft financial reports for internal leadership, the Finance Committee, and the Board of Trustees.

Technical Accounting and Month-End Close

Prepare or review more complex journal entries, including: releases from donor restrictions, depreciation and fixed asset accounting, prepaid expenses, investment activity and reconciliations, intercompany activity with YPC National

Maintain key balance sheet schedules, including:

Net assets with and without donor restrictions, fixed assets and depreciation schedules, prepaid expenses, loans, and other liabilities

Team Leadership

• Supervise the Finance Manager, staff accountant, and part-time bookkeeper
• Provide mentorship and guidance to accounting staff.
• Review accounting work to ensure accuracy and adherence to nonprofit accounting standards.
• Help strengthen internal accounting procedures and financial controls.

Banking and Reconciliations

• Ensure timely and accurate reconciliation of all bank and investment accounts.
• Review staff-prepared reconciliations and investigate discrepancies when necessary.
• Monitor accounting records for accuracy and completeness.

Grants and Restricted Funds Accounting

• Ensure proper accounting for restricted grants and contributions.
• Maintain schedules tracking restricted funds and releases from restriction.
• Monitor grant budgets in coordination with development staff.

Audit and Compliance

• Assist with the coordination of the annual audit process.
• Prepare schedules and documentation requested by the auditors.
• Work collaboratively with the organization’s external nonprofit accounting advisor and independent auditors.
• Support preparation of information required for Form 990 and related filings.

Systems and Process Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls.
• Assist with accounting-related aspects of system integrations, including planned connections between Salesforce and QuickBooks Online.
• Support improvements in financial reporting and data accuracy.

Qualifications

Required

• Minimum 5–10 years of nonprofit accounting experience
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP
• Experience with monthly close and financial reporting
• Experience working with QuickBooks Online
• Strong Excel skills
• Experience supporting nonprofit audits
• Ability to supervise staff while remaining hands-on in accounting work
• Strong organizational and communication skills

Preferred

• CPA license (preferred but not required)
• Experience with grant-funded nonprofit organizations
• Familiarity with Salesforce or other donor management systems

Compensation: Salary range: $70,000 – $85,000 full-time equivalent, prorated for part-time hours (20–25 hours per week)
