    About the Foundation

The American Himalayan Foundation (AHF) was founded in 1981 by a small group of climbers who went to Nepal and Tibet for the mountains but returned over and over for the people. AHF’s first partners were Sir Edmund Hillary and His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and our first projects involved working with Sherpas and Tibetan refugees. Our reach continues to grow to touch the lives of many thousands of people throughout the Himalaya every year.

AHF partners with visionary local individuals and organizations in the region, balancing innovation and tradition to bring education, health, and opportunity to people in need. We also respond to crises and help communities build climate resilience and maintain their culture in a quickly changing world.

    The Opportunity

AHF is seeking a Communications Manager who is passionate about the power of good writing and effective marketing to build relationships and inspire action. You will lead the organization’s communications strategy, seeing the big picture and charting path to meet ambitious goals while working hands-on with a small team to bring it to life.

As AHF’s primary storyteller, you’ll produce persuasive and compelling copy, in both long and short form, across channels and mediums. You will be responsible for managing the digital face of the organization and online campaigns, reporting on key results and making recommendations to improve outcomes.

    What You’ll Do

    • Write and edit content for emails, social media, web, physical mail, and other materials
    • Develop and implement a marketing strategy, planning all outbound communications from conception through execution, and maintain an editorial calendar
    • Think of new and creative ways to engage with our current audience, reach new potential supporters, and raise funds for our programs
    • Manage our email program, social media platforms, and website
    • Analyze and report on data from Mailchimp, Meta, Google Analytics, and other sources to help refine and strengthen future outreach
    • Curate our rich photo archive, selecting images that resonate with our audience and reinforce messaging and brand

    Who You Are

The right candidate is a strong writer and editor who can channel our tone and message with ease and understands the power of a well-chosen image. We’re looking for a strategic thinker to build a high-level visionary plan grounded in the details, someone who’s organized and excited to take ownership of projects. To be successful, you will need to be curious, a creative and resourceful problem solver, and very comfortable with technology.

Just as important as professional skills is the right attitude: a sense of humor, a collaborative spirit, and a readiness to bring ideas, energy, and passion to the role. AHF is a small, mission-driven team. We work hard, laugh often, and care deeply about what we do.

A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience is required, ideally with an emphasis on marketing or fundraising. And so is alignment with our unofficial motto: Do good. Be kind. Have fun. Because we take the work seriously—but not ourselves.

This is a fulltime on-site position in San Francisco, CA. To apply, email a cover letter and resume to careers@himalayan-foundation.org.
