    The Executive Director guides the work of Spark Newton, a nonprofit whose mission is to build community through free arts and culture events, engaging public art, and enlivened public spaces. Our work enhances the quality of life in Newton, MA by sparking joy, igniting creativity, adding to economic growth in the community and fostering meaningful connections.

    The next Executive Director must be a hands-on leader who balances strategic vision with day-to-day operations in a small, resource-conscious organization capable of juggling fundraising, program planning, marketing, and administrative responsibilities and managing a small staff – a part time Bookkeeper and part time Marketing & Social Media Associate. In collaboration with the Board, the Executive Director will oversee, execute, and lead Spark Newton’s strategic vision driving organizational growth, financial sustainability, community visibility, and programming.

    This is a full time (40 hours/week), salaried position offering a supportive, flexible, and hybrid work environment. Salary $65,000 - $70,000 commensurate with experience.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Organizational Leadership & Strategy:

    • Partner with the Board of Directors to advance Spark Newton’s mission, strategic goals, and long-term sustainability
    • Translate strategic priorities into actionable plans and measurable outcomes
    • Serve as a visible and trusted leader within the Newton community

    Fundraising & Development:

    • Leads fundraising and development to meet or exceed goals as set annually in collaboration with the Board of Directors, including corporate sponsorships, individual gifts, grants and special events.
    • Engages and cultivates the business community, board members and individuals as new donors.
    • Manages donor thank you acknowledgements and benefits

    Operations & Administration:

    • Works closely with the Spark Newton treasurer and finance committee to develop and implement an annual balanced budget
    • Oversees all key financial, expense, operational and administrative processes and maintains records of same.
    • Ensures organizational compliance and sound governance practices
    • Coordinates with external professionals, including:
        • Accountant (tax filings and financial compliance)
        • Insurance providers (policies and renewals)
        • State and regulatory agencies (Mass Secretary of State’s annual filings and reports)

    Program Management & Marketing:

    • Leads or gives support for Spark Newton signature events, public art initiatives, and festivals.
    • Leads and directs the Spark Newton Community Micro Grant program.
    • Leads and directs the Nancy Quint Schon Arts Scholarship program.
    • Oversees and manages fiscal sponsorships.
    • Drafts and distributes press releases and acts as the Spark Newton spokesperson for media requests
    • Oversees marketing and communications efforts, including:
      • Development, execution, and distribution of marketing materials
      • Website updates
      • Press releases
      • Twice-monthly newsletter
      • Social media strategy and content
      • CRM management and donor data integrity

    Community Engagement:

    • The Executive Director is the face of the organization:
      • Acts as spokesperson for Spark Newton signature events
      • Attends community meetings as necessary to promote and represent Spark Newton
      • Builds strong relationships with artists, residents, civic leaders, and partner organizations
      • Promotes Spark Newton’s mission, programs, and impact throughout the community

    Board Governance

    • Partner with Board Chair to plan and organize monthly board meetings
    • Support committee work through agenda development, communication, and follow-up
    • Maintain board records and ensure clear, timely board communications

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • 3-5 years of management and/or event experience, preferably in nonprofit, arts or community-based organizations
    • Demonstrated fundraising or donor engagement experience
    • Experience with standard business software, marketing and social media platforms
    • Ability to work independently, effectively communicate and foster a collaborative approach in a small team environment
    • Reliable, consistent, and strong multi-tasking and organizational skills
