About the position:
The part-time Managing Director or Development Director will oversee the administration of the organization with Founding Artistic Director Adam Odsess-Rubin, including: fundraising, oversight of employees and vendors, and day-to-day program management. Working towards NQT’s 10 year anniversary in 2028, using the 2026-2028 Strategic Plan as a guide, this leadership role will be instrumental in running the day-to-day of the organization. Reporting to the Artistic Director, they will help lead a small team of part-time staff, interns, and volunteers. They will be integral in growing the company in a formative period, and will have the ability to help shape the future of the organization. This role will require a highly collaborative attitude, with the ability to expertly navigate the business and artistic oversight of a small nonprofit theater.
The position starts August 17, 2026 beginning with a three month contract evaluated by the Artistic Director and Board of Directors. Working hours are suggested as 10am-4pm EST (with flexibility on exact schedule) with some nights and weekends. This position will be half remote and half in-person in Brooklyn, with increased in-person work during peak production times.
Core Responsibilities:
- 30%: Manage short and long-term financial planning, legal and tax compliance, annual filings, insurance renewals, and all program and organizational budgeting serving as primary liaison with ArtsPool, a nonprofit financial management cooperative. Strong values-based budgeting capabilities are a must, including budget creation, projections, tracking and reporting, and working with our board of directors.
- 30%: Partner with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors to achieve a $450,000 budget. Lead and execute individual giving campaigns, maintain the grants calendar, and write and report on foundation and corporate grants while building and maintaining donor and funder relationships with the organization.
- 20%: Support the production of the annual Criminal Queerness Festival, mainstage productions, staged readings, developmental workshops, and other one-off special artistic projects. Work alongside Artistic Director and artists to deliver high-quality performances to LGBTQ+ audiences in New York City and beyond. Ensure an equitable and smooth rehearsal and production process. Work closely with the Artistic Director on the day-to-day producing of season and educational & community programming, including hiring staff and artists, onboarding and contracting, program evaluation, and ensuring an equitable workplace. Manage contracts, payments, and reporting with Actors Equity Association.
- 20%: Manage administrative workflow and communication for a full-time staff of 1 and part-time staff of 5, and a number of paid interns and contractors. Develop and oversee contracts, training, compliance, and hiring. Cultivate positive and cohesive company culture rooted in queer joy and community-building.
An ideal candidate will have:
- A strong passion for nonprofit management, arts leadership, and/or community organizing.
- Knowledge of union contracts (AEA) and various types / scopes of show contracts.
- Experience working in intersectional LGBTQ+ communities.
- Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
- Demonstrated management and fundraising experience.
- The ability to communicate and collaborate closely with a small team.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
- Commitment to anti-racist and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles and practices.
- A collaborative spirit and cultural humility
- Proficiency in some or all of the following: Google Suite, Excel, PandaDoc, Ramp and Airtable
- Seeking to learn and grow with a startup performing arts company
Pay:
