SEIU 925 is looking for both Internal and Growth Organizers who are excited to build power with and for working families of all backgrounds, races, and genders.
About us:
The Service Employees International Union Local 925 (SEIU 925) is nearly 20,000 working people united to improve our jobs and our communities. We are education workers and public sector workers across Washington state. We are childcare providers, K-12 classified staff, higher education workers, public defenders, and county employees.
Applicants should have a passion for building power with workers, organizing, and the mission of SEIU Local 925. These positions will be based in our Seattle office. A driver’s license, vehicle insurance, and a car are required.
About the position:
SEIU Local 925 is looking for strategic and collaborative Organizers who will engage workers to build power, including through collective actions and bargaining campaigns. Our country has been in a period of sustained attack on working families. We are looking for organizers who are creative, dedicated to organizing, and unafraid to take risks and try new tactics and organizing styles. Organizer positions will be based out of the Seattle office. Please note that this is a salaried position, with irregular and long hours that vary according to campaign needs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify and develop member leaders
- Organize and teach workers to engage and lead their fellow union members.
- Seek out campaigns and issues that engage the full diversity of our membership, and develop workplans that specifically engage members who are people of color, immigrants, refugees, women, young adults, and/or from marginalized communities.
- Develop workplace organizing campaigns at all stages of a campaign, including probing and assessment, identification and development of organizing committees, and GOTV.
- Develop and conduct programs related to organizing, for example, GOTV or literature for large Campaigns, or statewide multi-unit projects.
- Participate in legislative and political work and engage members to do so
- Lead and maintain relationships with community allies, partner organizations and labor coalitions on issue campaigns.
Qualifications:
- Preferred union organizing experience.
- Ability to work independently
- Creativity and willingness to take risks in a supportive environment
- Commitment to developing leaders and organizing to win issue campaigns
- Experience working alongside communities of color and/or immigrant and refugee communities strongly preferred.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities at once and prioritize appropriately.
- Good writing skills.
- Possess technology skills.
- Ability to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, and travel both regionally and nationally as necessary.
Language Requirement for Internal Organizer:
To effectively serve our diverse member base, applicants for the Internal position must be fluent in at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Somali, or Amharic. This is a required qualification, as the position involves regular communication with community members who primarily speak these languages.
