    Ohioans to Stop Executions (OTSE), a state-wide non-profit organization working to end the

    death penalty in Ohio, seeks to hire a Campaign Organizer to facilitate our organization’s grassroots efforts at a time of tremendous momentum and opportunity. We are currently focused on passing bipartisan repeal legislation in the State Legislature through the multifaceted, strategic No Death Penalty Ohio campaign.

    As a Campaign Organizer of the No Death Penalty Ohio campaign, OTSE requires staff who can work across political spectrums, is comfortable and effective when interacting with members of the public in various settings. This work is highly relational and includes building and

    leveraging OTSE’s existing network, which includes murder victims’ family members and other

    survivors of violent crime, law enforcement professionals, families of the incarcerated, and

    persons who have been exonerated from death row.

    OTSE’s Campaign Organizer will be responsible for implementing strategic components of the campaign, including working collaboratively with the executive director, all staff and campaign partners to achieve identified benchmarks and outcomes. The Campaign Organizer will interact with and foster relationships with stakeholders, donors, board members, and the community. Effective communication and leadership are essential for success in this role.

    We are looking for someone with deep organizing experience and instincts who is a self-starter and motivated leader.

    The Campaign Organizer reports directly to the executive director. This is a position that can be

    located anywhere in Ohio. Hours are flexible, though most work will be done during

    regular business hours. The work of a campaign is fast-paced, and will require occasional work

    after business hours, including some weekends, and significant travel.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Educating community members, community leaders, and elected officials about the need for Ohio to end the death penalty, with a special emphasis on outreach to directly impacted communities;
    • Hosting, coordinating, and convening events, meetings, and outreach efforts in targeted districts / communities;
    • Working with the Executive Director to implement, manage, and track volunteering programs;
    • Connect with impacted community members to educate, engage, and urge them to support an end to the death penalty;
    • Recruit, mentor, and develop local individual, political, and organizational leaders as possible participants, representatives, and spokespersons for the campaign;
    • Data entry and some database management in collaboration with OTSE’s communications and development director;
    • This position envisions significant travel around Ohio to attend community events, connect with community members, and various other tasks, as needed;
    • Performing necessary administrative duties, including correspondences with members and volunteers via email, phone, social media, etc;
    • This role may require willingness to occasionally work on weeknights and weekends.

    Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications:

    • At least 2 years of community organizing experience;
    • Passion for speaking truth to power;
    • Strong interpersonal skills and problem solving skills;
    • Demonstrated ability or experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, spiritual and socioeconomic backgrounds;
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to adapt messaging to a diverse array of communities, groups and settings;
    • Ability to motivate and manage small teams of people;
    • Self motivation and the ability to work well collaboratively;
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines simultaneously; Prior knowledge of grassroots organizing principles, issue advocacy, Ohio politics, and criminal legal system reform are preferred.
