Position: Development Associate
Reports to: Executive Director
AdoptOneBlock seeks an energetic Development Associate to work closely with the Founder, Executive Director, and other team members across a variety of projects and initiatives, gaining hands-on experience in nonprofit development, community engagement, and event support. AdoptOneBlock is a small and growing organization. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully across many aspects of the organization while developing valuable skills for career growth.
We are looking for someone who is curious and eager to learn, detail-oriented, and wants to grow with us as we improve our processes to support more programs. This role will work with our volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. This position offers a unique opportunity for someone passionate about working with an environmental nonprofit that has championed a unique approach to civic engagement.
Development Associate Responsibilities & Duties
What You'll Actually Be Doing
- Assist in the planning and execution of fundraising communications and events
- Manage and update donor databases and records
- Draft and send donor communications, including program success updates, thank you letters, and newsletters
- Research potential funding sources and grant opportunities
- Collaborate with the development team to create and implement fundraising strategies
- Analyze donor data and create reports to assess the effectiveness of development initiatives
- Coordinate volunteer activities
- Prepare materials for donor meetings and presentations
- Support the grant writing process by gathering necessary information and documentation
- Monitor and manage social media accounts related to fundraising activities
- Oversee the corporate sponsorship process and reporting
- Oversee foundation applications and reporting
- Communicate with donors, including thank-you calls and emails
- Oversee status of and communication with major donors
- Other duties as assigned
Development Associate Qualifications & Skills
You're Our Person If...
Experience:
- 1-3 years in sales, fundraising or other public facing roles focused on relationship building and long term engagement
Skills:
- Quick learner with new technology
- Proficiency in Google Workspace, social media platforms, and other relevant technologies
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative small-team environment while taking ownership of projects and responsibilities
- Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking abilities
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team

- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to start conversations and connect authentically with a diverse range of volunteers, donors, sponsors, and community members
- Self-starter with the ability to manage multiple priorities and responsibilities effectively

- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle donor information with discretion
Even Better If...
- Proficiency in donor management or CRM software
- Familiarity with Canva, Airtable, and similar platforms used for content creation, project management, and organizational communication
- Experience supporting event planning and coordination
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Enthusiastic about the mission and goals of the organization
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $55K-$65K, commensurate with experience.
- Benefits: QSEHRA health reimbursement benefit, matching 401(k), paid time off
Location: Hybrid (Portland, OR Metro Area)
This position is primarily remote; however, candidates must be based in the Portland, OR metropolitan area. AdoptOneBlock does not maintain a central office, though occasional in-person meetings, events, and community activities take place throughout the Portland metro area.
