Position Summary:
The Development Officer is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to identify, cultivate and secure significant support from individual donors, foundations and other philanthropic partners. This role includes donor relations, data management, major donor events, and collaboration with contract or volunteer support in grants, communications, and marketing.
An important performance objective is to secure major donations equal to at least two times your annual compensation within your first year and trending upward from there.
Key Responsibilities:
- Donor Identification & Cultivation
- Identify and research potential major donors
- Develop personalized engagement plans for each donor.
- Cultivate relationships through regular communication, meetings, and tailored events.
- Solicitation & Stewardship
- Develop and execute solicitation strategies for major gifts.
- Ensure timely and meaningful stewardship of donors.
- Provide regular updates and reports on the impact of their contributions.
- Collaboration
- Work with your board liaisons to guide and ensure coordination of strategy, plans and messaging across the following teams:
- Grant writing (Contract)
- Social Media Marketing (volunteer)
- Communications (volunteer)
- Donor Database Management
- Gift entry, tax receipts, and acknowledgment processes.
- Generation of regular reports: revenue progress, donor retention, LYBUNT lists, prospect pipelines, and forecasting.
- Maintaining accurate records for restricted gifts
- Grants
- With the grant writer, develop a plan and strategy to build and grow the support base among foundations.
- Include key contacts in your development plan including relationship building, appreciation events, and ongoing communication.
- Insure timely grant reporting to grantees
- Event Planning:
- If appropriate, organize and manage exclusive events for this major donor base.
- Create opportunities for donors to engage with the organization and see the impact of their support.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, or related field.
- Proven experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in animal welfare or related sectors.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational and project management abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
