    Descrição

    Organizational Summary:

    The New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice (NJAIJ) is the state’s largest immigration coalition. Together with over 60 member organizations, NJAIJ fights for policies that empower and protect immigrants. We are seeking applications for Deputy Director of Movement Building programming.

    NJAIJ brings together the power and strength of our member organizations to ensure immigrant communities are leaders in campaigns that advance justice, inclusion, and belonging. NJAIJ is at the forefront of every major immigrant justice fight. We are the first to speak up and the last to stand down. Joining our staff means joining an active team of leaders who are compassionate as they are courageous and working in coalition with some of the state’s brightest minds.

    The Role:

    The Deputy Director of Movement Building leads NJAIJ’s programming and member empowerment. The Deputy Director of Movement Building develops and executes all aspects of NJAIJ programs and capacity building. The Deputy supervises the full time Community Empowerment Facilitator and seasonal part time associates and interns. The successful candidate will deepen NJAIJ’s coordination and collaboration with cross-movement organizations and leaders in order to move social, racial and economic justice movements forward and in closer coordination with each other.

    This is a hybrid position that combines some remote work from home, remote work from member organization sites, and in-person attendance at our Newark office. The Deputy Director is expected to maintain a prominent, visible profile across New Jersey and will be expected to travel to outreach events, rallies, and community organizing or training opportunities across the state. Given the external-facing nature of the Deputy Director role, a significant amount of time will be spent building relationships and communicating across a variety of audiences: media, elected officials, grassroots activists, the community, and other stakeholders in our coalition and across New Jersey. The role will occasionally require periods of standing, walking, and light lifting (boxes with outreach materials, banners, etc), as well as stationary desk, sitting, phone, and screen time when not in the field (office days, drafting and researching training materials, supervising and reporting, etc).

    This is a senior leadership role within NJAIJ and reports to the Executive Director. NJAIJ requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all staff.

    Responsibilities:

    In addition to supporting NJAIJ’s overall mission, the Deputy Director of Movement Building will:

    Manage NJAIJ’s Movement Building team , which includes coordinators, facilitators, and seasonal associates or interns, by:

    • Providing management, supervision, and oversight of NJAIJ’s Movement Building staff, including weekly meetings, 1-1s, and annual performance evaluation;
    • Identifying opportunities for the team’s professional and network development, career growth, and acquisition of new skills;
    • Regularly updating all NJAIJ staff so our team is up to speed and aware of community, advocacy, organizing, and other movement developments so we can continue to lead the statewide conversation on immigration;
    • Serving as primary point of contact and the lead “voice” of NJAIJ’s Movement Building and membership work.

    Strengthen NJAIJ’s coalition work by investing in member organizations, including:

    • Executing all aspects (programming, logistics, facilitation, speaker and participant recruitment) of NJAIJ programs, like Advocacy Academy, Listening Tour, and Movement Mentorship, and developing new programs in response to coalition need and feedback;
    • Provide support of NJAIJ member organizations so they can, in coordination with NJAIJ’s Deputy Director of Policy Advocacy, more fully participate in coalition advocacy campaigns;
    • Building and sustaining robust and authentic relationships with NJAIJ members and other movement allies, organizations, and partners;
    • Convening and hosting new member screenings, orientations, as well as events, meetings, trainings, fireside chats, listening sessions, and other engagement activities for organizations within the coalition.

    Grow NJAIJ’s influence as a coalition and movement building leader by:

    • Identifying and pursuing partners, networks, volunteers, issue experts, and other relationships that allow the Movement Building Team to bring additional programming, training topics, or members to the coalition;
    • Analyzing geographic regions of New Jersey where immigrant rights advocacy and organizing capacity are limited and provide engagement accordingly;
    • Planning and facilitating technical assistance and capacity-building for newly emerging coalitions and grassroots organizations so that they may use NJAIJ tools and resources to further establish themselves in the social and racial justice movement;
    • Curating the NJAIJ Resource Hub and collaborating with other NJAIJ teams to create training materials, explainers, and other resources needed for public education efforts, distributing them to members and partners across the state.

    Qualifications & Core Competencies:

    The selection process will consider a wide range of lived and earned experiences.

    All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following experiences and competencies:

    • 2-4 years managing direct reports and/or small teams.
    • Demonstrated training, facilitation, or education experience and an ability to communicate complex ideas in concise, accessible language (verbal and written).
    • Curriculum development, program management, adult education, ESOL, or community outreach experience.
    • Familiarity with movement spaces and coalitions, especially in facilitating consensus and understanding appropriate times for generative conflict vs conflict resolution.
    • Strong commitment and personal ties to immigrant, racial, social, and economic justice and critical analysis of systemic racism and structural inequities in New Jersey.

    Once satisfying the above, competitive applicants will also possess a majority of the following:

    • Eagerness to work in fast-paced environments that require transitioning quickly between tasks.
    • Sense of independence and ability to make strategic decisions, even with limited information.
    • Careful attention to detail and well-developed time and project management skills.
    • Familiarity with New Jersey base-building and community-based organizations.
    • Strong computer literacy and willingness to incorporate new tools and technology into their work.
    • Bi- and multilingual candidates who have reading and writing proficiency in Arabic, Haitian Creole, French, and/or other West African languages, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.
    • A strong track record of collaboration, organizing toward collective change, and demonstrated experience building deep, trusted relationships, even across diverse communities, backgrounds, and beliefs (we know this can mean many things, tell us how it manifests in your work!).
    • Enthusiasm for snacks, cute pictures of animals, and building collective community power.
