    Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic, Inc., is a congregation of Catholic religious sisters who have served as missionaries since 1912, when we became the first group of Catholic sisters in the United States founded for overseas mission. Today, we have more than 200 sisters serving in 18 places around the world and throughout the United States, including at our Center House in Ossining, N.Y. Our sisters and lay staff work as collaborative partners to realize our mission: “Co-creating a one earth community where the values of whole-making, mission and contemplation are being lived out.”

    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Planned and Major Gifts Manager manages and coordinates the Planned and Major Gifts operations and supports Mission Projects Funding efforts of the Development Department.

    This position develops, implements and refines strategic, targeted marketing plans to encourage individuals and corporations to provide support to the Maryknoll Sisters' Congregation in the form of major gifts, both current and deferred.

    The Manager oversees acknowledgment processes for all foundation gifts and cultivation and acknowledgment processes for major donors.

    Interacts directly and extensively with the Development Director, the Treasurer, and other Development Department managers and supervisors. Supervises Major Donor Officers and the Major Donor Associate.

    Serves as a member of a team committed to the success of all Development efforts.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Informs, motivates and educates donors by sharing creative planning ideas on how best to prepare for their future and still make a charitable gift to the Maryknoll Sisters.
    • Develops materials for printing and marketing (e.g., brochures and literature). Develops schedule of mailings; Works with consultant to design appropriate mailings and materials; Selects donors for projects and mailings establishing and using appropriate criteria; Coordinates the preparation of informative brochures.
    • Maintains Planned Giving materials on the Maryknoll Sisters Web Site. Reviews Web Site materials at least monthly; Works with webmaster, consultant and providers to ensure Web Site material is legally and financially accurate and up to date; Periodically refreshes information and case studies provided.
    • Responds to Donor Inquiries Provides requested information on planned giving vehicles and other gift opportunities; Prepares and sends individualized annuity proposals with specific income tax information; Follows up annuity proposals; Acknowledges annuity checks received and submits to Treasury with appropriate calculations; Prepares and sends annuity agreements consistent with the laws of the State of residence of the donor.
    • Cultivates donors by personal communications Performs analysis to establish criteria and select donors targeted for enhanced cultivation efforts; Engages in documentation and research to identify key prospects and enhance the donor cultivation process; Communicates, and visits as appropriate, with donors and prospects to explain deferred and major giving options and benefits; Prepares development proposals and presents development projects to prospects for deferred and outright gifts; Works with Major Donor officers to assign portfolios and devise follow-up strategies for donors identified as major donor prospects; Oversees implementation of moves management processes in coordination with Sisters engaging directly with donors (leadership, volunteers, part-time, and full time Major Gifts Officers); Develops and maintains personal contact with prospects to encourage interest in giving options and to provide information concerning the utilization of gifts. When necessary and appropriate, coordinates activities with prospects’ attorneys and/or financial advisors and/or refers to the Planned Giving consultant; Writes and sends birthday and sympathy cards; Coordinates visits and special donor events and travels according, as needed; Manages the Lamplighters Legacy Society and coordinates its activities to cultivate and recognize Planned Giving donors.
    • Supports Mission Projects Funding efforts: Works with grant writers in preparation of Project Proposals and correspondences with grant-makers; In consultation with Treasury and MPF office, allocates special funds and grants to Sisters/Regions based on Treasury reports and Sister needs (Venne, Baird, and Designated Gifts); Receives and processes contributions from foundations; Communicates with Sister-project holders about designated grants and gifts allocations; Facilitates appropriate responses to individual donors, groups and foundations in providing necessary information.
    • Manages foundation and major donor correspondence.
    • Ensures compliance with State Regulations.
    • Verifies that office practice is consistent with State laws.
    • Coordinates with Treasury and Congregational Leadership to ensure compliance with governmental regulations and Congregational gift acceptance and investment policies.
    • Works with Treasury to ensure pursuit of best practices for legal and financial management of the Charitable Gift Annuity Program.
    • Develops Planned and Major gifts strategy and monitors performance.
    • Plans, submits and evaluates annual budget and operating plan.
    • Performs ongoing campaign analysis and review.
    • Conducts strategic planning on Major Donors together with Development Director.
    • Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates work activities of Major Donor Officers and Major Donor Associate. This includes hiring, conducting performance appraisals, and termination of employment. *
    • Maintains current knowledge of Planned Giving vehicles, State regulations, major donor outreach methods, and other topics pertinent to maintaining best practices in the Planned Giving Office.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

    • Previous experience in fund-raising, especially personal interaction with donors.
    • Previous experience in related work (for example, the Treasury Department) and/or work involving tax laws, wills, annuities, and insurance.

    MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED

    Bachelor’s degree and training in areas of economics, taxation, estate planning, insurance.
