Part-Time, 30 Hours per Week
Location: Remote
Pay Range: Pro-rated based on $72,000 – 75,000 full-time equivalency
The Director of Professional Development sets the strategic direction and leads the operations of the Editorial Freelancers Association's (EFA) education department. This role plays a key role in developing the EFA's library of asynchronous and self-paced courses and webinars, and manages all aspects of the program, including registration, reporting, technical troubleshooting, and payments. The Director also oversees the EFA's annual virtual conference and four in-person mini conferences held throughout the year.
This role is well suited to a strategic, detail-oriented leader with experience in education program management, instructional design, and event production, who is equally comfortable setting long-term direction and managing the day-to-day operational details that make a program run well. Instructional design experience is a key part of this role, since the Director works closely with new and current instructors to help them design effective courses and webinars.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership
- Set the strategic direction, annual goals, and priorities for the education department
- Develop and manage the department's annual budget and track performance against goals
- Identify growth opportunities and emerging trends in freelance editorial education and professional development
- Represent the education program in organizational planning and leadership discussions
Curriculum & Program Development
- Develop and expand the library of asynchronous, self-paced courses and webinars
- Identify curriculum gaps and source, develop, or commission new course content
- Recruit, onboard, and evaluate instructors and subject matter experts
- Apply instructional design principles to guide instructors in structuring effective, engaging asynchronous courses and webinars
- Coach and train instructors on course design, learning objectives, and best practices for adult and online learners
- Review and provide feedback on course structure and materials before launch to ensure a consistent, high-quality learner experience
- Ensure all course content remains current, high-quality, and accessible to members
Program Operations & Administration
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the education program, including registration, reporting, technical troubleshooting, and payments
- Manage the learning management system (LMS) platform to ensure a smooth participant experience
- Track and analyze enrollment, revenue, and completion data, and report findings to leadership
- Manage instructor and vendor contracts, invoicing, and payments
- Establish and enforce program policies, including refunds and continuing education requirements where applicable
Conference & Event Management
- Direct the planning and execution of the EFA's annual virtual conference, including agenda development, speaker recruitment, logistics, and budget
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to plan and execute four in-person mini conferences held throughout the year, including venue selection, logistics, speaker coordination, and on-site management
- Manage conference budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships
- Coordinate with the communications team on marketing and promotion of courses, webinars, and conferences
Team & Stakeholder Management
- Supervise education department staff, contractors, and instructors as applicable
- Collaborate with communications, membership, and finance teams to support shared organizational goals
- Serve as the primary point of contact for instructors, presenters, and education program partners
- Gather and respond to member feedback to continuously improve program offerings
Qualifications:
- Experience in instructional design, including designing or evaluating asynchronous and self-paced online courses
- 5+ years of experience in education program management, professional development, or association management
- Experience coaching or training instructors, facilitators, or subject matter experts on course design
- Experience planning and executing both virtual and in-person conferences or events
- Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) and virtual event platforms
- Strong project management, budgeting, and organizational skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines independently
- Interest in or familiarity with freelance editorial work is a plus
Schedule:
This is a part-time, non-exempt position at 30 hours per week. Some evening or weekend availability may be required around conference dates and program launches.
