    DEVELOPMENT AND COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

    Position Terms: Non-exempt, full-time, 40 hours per week

    Start Date: September - October, 2026

    Location: East San Francisco Bay Area, California, based in Berkeley

    Organizational Information

    KIDS for the BAY (KftB) is an environmental education organization now in its 35th year of operation. We deliver engaging, hands-on programs to our partner elementary schools throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Our programs connect school students with nature on field trips to creek, bay and ocean habitats, engage students in science learning that supports Next Generation Science Standards, and inspire students to become environmentalists. We provide professional development in environmental science education for our partner teachers. We also run an exciting Summer Camp for children ages 5 – 11 to explore in nature, learn hands-on science and become environmental stewards.     Our office is located in the Lorin District of Berkeley, walking distance from Ashby BART station and surrounded by popular coffee shops, restaurants and unique neighborhood stores, as well as a weekly Farmers Market. Most working days will be spent in the office, and there will also be site visits to our partner schools, field trip and summer camp locations.     The Ideal Candidate

    The ideal candidate is passionate about environmental education and about supporting the mission and programs of KftB. They are committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, hands-on environmental science learning and promoting positive solutions to environmental problems. This candidate is excited to tell the stories of our work and promote our belief that everyone is an environmentalist! This person has a lot of energy and enthusiasm, is highly organized, has excellent writing and communications skills and can multi-task on a daily basis to meet the needs of working in an effective grassroots nonprofit organization that provides engaging, community-based programs.

    Responsibilities

    The Development and Communications Coordinator will be responsible for a variety of fundraising and communications projects, in addition to providing office support. This position will work in close collaboration with the Executive Director and with the program staff team and will report to the Executive Director.

    Fundraising:

    • Research potential new funders
    • Prepare grant application packages
    • Coordinate program site visits for funders and donors
    • Coordinate Little Green Light Constituent Relationship Management database, create and send fundraising appeals and acknowledgement emails to funders and donors

    Grant Reports:

    • Prepare grant and contract management plans for assigned funders, and prepare reports, photo documents, and receipts/spreadsheets to support invoices
    • Review grant and contract management plans and review and edit report packages prepared by program staff and ensure all components are complete and ready to submit
    • Update the KftB Fundraising Calendar with report, invoice and new grant application due dates

    Communications:

    • Help develop communications plans and goals
    • Coordinate monthly communications calendar and communications campaigns
    • Lead regular communications agenda items at staff meetings and communications meetings
    • Coordinate marketing for programs for schools and summer camp outreach, including email campaigns, online advertising and flyer distribution
    • Support the program staff team with communications projects including reports, photo documents, blog page stories, quotes, pictures and video clips
    • Create and post blog page stories
    • Complete regular website maintenance and content updates and post blog page stories to the website
    • Develop and send segmented and general Mailchimp email campaigns
    • Help develop and contribute to the annual report and prepare report mailing
    • Coordinate social media campaigns and increase engagement (IG, FB, LI)
    • Coordinate and attend outreach/tabling events with the program staff team
    • Help organize community volunteer events and other events as assigned
    • Help organize and set up Advisory Board meetings and provide staff support to the Development and Communications Committee of the Advisory Board

    Office Support:

    • Process weekly office accounting
    • Take inventory and purchase office supplies and order printed materials
    • Provide technology support as needed
    • Organize repairs for office equipment and maintain the efficiency of all office machines
    • Improve the look and feel of the office environment

    Qualifications and Experience

    Qualifications and Experience:

    • At least two years of experience working in nonprofit organizations in fundraising support, grant reports coordination, communications and administration
    • Bachelor's degree in communications, nonprofit management or related field
    • Excellent written and oral communications skills
    • Experience with Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, and Forms)
    • Mailchimp, basic WordPress, Canva, Customer Relations Management database and project management platform experience

    • Ability to multitask while maintaining attention to detail and high quality of work
    • Excellent organizational, time management and planning skills
    • Willingness to follow direction from the Executive Director and collaborate on shared projects, as well as self-direct/manage tasks independently, and work effectively with the program staff in a team-based approach

    Compensation

    The starting salary is $55,000 per year. This salary is non-negotiable. Paid holidays, sick leave, health and vacation benefits are included.
