About the Global Fund for Widows (GFW)
The Global Fund for Widows is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering widows and female heads of households to overcome poverty through skills-based training, job creation, and micro-finance. Ultimately, our goal is to help widows achieve financial stability, self-sufficiency, accountability, and become role models to their own children and to others.
Role Summary
GFW is seeking a mission-driven Communications Manager to lead our external communications, storytelling, and digital presence. This role is central to how we communicate impact; translating program results, advocacy milestones, and lived experiences into compelling, ethical narratives for donors, partners, policymakers, and the public.
The Communications Manager will work closely with the Programs Manager to showcase impact on the ground and with leadership to support fundraising, partnerships, and advocacy objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Communications Strategy & Storytelling
- Develop and implement GFW’s communications strategy in alignment with organizational priorities (fundraising, advocacy, visibility)
- Lead storytelling that centers dignity, agency, and ethical representation of widows
- Translate program data, monitoring & evaluation insights, and field updates into accessible, compelling narratives
Content Creation
- Produce high-quality written materials, including:
- Public-facing annual and impact reports
- Donor reports and impact summaries
- One-pagers, briefs, and fact sheets
- Pitch decks and presentations for donors and partners
- Website and newsletter content
- Ensure consistent tone, messaging, and branding across all materials
Digital & Social Media
- Manage GFW’s social media accounts across relevant platforms
- Develop content calendars and campaign-based storytelling (e.g. International Widows’ Day, UN moments, donor campaigns)
- Draft, schedule, and monitor posts; analyze performance and adjust strategy accordingly
- Coordinate with internal teams to amplify programmatic and advocacy milestones
Design & Visual Communications
- Create basic visual assets using tools such as Canva (social media graphics, one-pagers, presentations)
- Maintain visual consistency with GFW branding guidelines
- Develop data visualizations
- Coordinate with external designers when advanced design support is required
Collaboration & Internal Coordination
- Work closely with the Programs Manager to capture program impact and results from the field
- Support Development and Partnerships efforts with communications materials for foundations, corporate partners, and institutional donors
- Coordinate with leadership to align messaging across fundraising, advocacy, and programmatic work
Qualifications & Experience
- 3–7 years of experience in communications, marketing, or storytelling, preferably within NGOs or mission-driven organizations
- Demonstrated experience writing for public audiences, donors, and institutional stakeholders
- Strong understanding of ethical storytelling and safeguarding principles
- Significant experience managing organizational social media accounts
- Basic graphic design skills (Canva required; Adobe a plus)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Highly organized, self-directed, and comfortable working in a small, global team
- Strong alignment with GFW’s mission and values
Nice to Have
- Experience with advocacy or policy-oriented communications (UN, CSW, WPS, etc.)
- Familiarity with donor communications and grant reporting
- Experience working with international or field-based teams
- Basic analytics and reporting skills (social media, email, campaign performance)
