Location: Pomona (headquarters) and various locations across the Inland Valley
Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Reports to: Worker Rights Director
Salary: $23.00 per hour
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9-5:30 pm, and occasional evenings and weekends
Who We Are:
Pomona Economic Opportunity Center’s (PEOC) mission is to empower low-wage immigrant workers in Pomona and across the Inland Empire (IE) – Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. We work towards a vision of a more just, equitable, healthier, safer, and welcoming society for immigrants and low-wage workers where they are no longer invisible or silenced, have a positive relationship with formal institutions, and have a more effective voice with policymakers in a society where all people have ample opportunity to thrive. PEOC advances its values of empowerment, equity, and social justice through three program areas: Worker Rights (WR), Immigrant Rights (IR), and Housing Justice (HJ). The Worker Rights Program includes the Day Labor Program, Household Worker Program, and Health and Safety Program.
Position Summary:
The Health & Safety Organizer-in-Training (OIT) will support outreach, worker engagement, leadership development, and program implementation for day laborers, domestic workers, and other low-wage immigrant workers. This position is part of PEOC’s broader OIT pipeline, with the goal of developing the skills, political education, and leadership necessary to transition into a professional organizer role. The Health & Safety OIT will receive weekly supervision, and participate in monthly political education and organizer development sessions.
The Health & Safety OIT is an entry-level position within PEOC’s Worker Rights Department designed to build the next generation of worker organizers. The Health & Safety OIT will receive structured training, mentorship, and hands-on experience in worker and community organizing, with a focus on health access and workplace safety.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct health and safety worker rights outreach at day labor corners, worker sites, and community locations to educate, recruit, engage, and retain worker members
- Build relationships with workers, identify emerging leaders, and support leadership development through trainings, campaigns, and public actions
- Support the development and facilitation of worker-led committees, member meetings, and popular education workshops on workplace safety, health access, and workers’ rights
- Develop and distribute culturally and linguistically appropriate educational materials, PPE, and workplace health and safety resources
- Support workers in accessing health resources and basic workplace safety information
- Learn how to assist workers in documenting workplace issues and filing health and safety complaints with Cal OSHA
- Assist workers in accessing health resources, documenting workplace issues, and learning how to file health and safety complaints
- Participate in campaigns and advocacy efforts related to health and safety and worker rights
- Represent PEOC in coalitions and community meetings as an Organizer-in-Training
- Participate in health and safety campaigns, advocacy efforts, coalitions, and community meetings, as an Organizer-in-Training
- Support relationship-building with partner organizations, agencies, and institutions
- Support data collection and reporting for program goals and grant requirements
- Attend all required staff meetings, trainings, and political education sessions
- Work collaboratively with PEOC’s team of organizers and all PEOC departments
Qualifications:
- Commitment to worker rights, immigrant rights, and social justice, with an understanding of— or willingness to learn about— the experiences of low-wage and undocumented workers
- Ability to collaborate and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds
- Willingness to learn community organizing and participate in a structured training program
- Strong communication skills and/or a willingness to develop them
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays
- Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and car insurance
Physical Demands:
Employees must be able to maneuver throughout the community in various locations of unknown accessibility and do phone or computer work for extended periods of time. They must also be able to lift and move paperwork and files up to twenty (20) pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Work Environment:
A modular building located next to the 71 Freeway serves as the office; street corners and parking lots where day laborers congregate, and neighborhood door-to-door knocking on occasion.
