Part-time Sailing Instructor
Hours: Scheduled as desired on weekends (most often) and weekdays (possible trial programs for adults, and after-school for youth)
Reports to: SCBC Program Director
Age: 18 or older
The Organization:
The Sausalito Community Boating Center (SCBC) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to making boating and waterfront experiences accessible to all. SCBC's mission is to preserve a gathering place on Sausalito's waterfront that engages and educates the public about our rich maritime history and small-craft heritage through affordable, hands-on experiences.
After more than a decade of planning, fundraising, and volunteer effort, SCBC opened its waterfront facilities to the public in 2025. Today, the organization offers community boating opportunities, educational programs, classes, and events that connect people of all ages to Richardson Bay and Sausalito's maritime traditions.
The Role:
The Sailing Instructor is a part‑time, seasonal position responsible for teaching safe and engaging sailing lessons mainly to their preferred age group (youth or adults) at SCBC. Instructors promote a fun, inclusive learning environment while maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism.
The SCBC camp Sailing Instructor will be responsible for following a general sailing framework for classes to develop their own classes that involve the most relevant candidates from SCBC’s fleet of sailing dinghies and Pelican boats.
This position requires an adult candidate (18 years or older) with a passion for sailing and a commitment to providing a safe, educational, and enjoyable sailing experience.
The Team:
The sailing instructor will be working with an assistant. The assistant will generally be operating a safety boat and helping to rig and clean up.
Work Hours:
Sailing class calendars will be created in tandem with the instructors on the roster. All instructors will be paid for a day-long orientation and training session at a time mutually agreed upon by all parties prior to the first day of solo instruction.
Qualifications:
- Prior sailing instruction experience required
- US Sailing instructor certification and SafeSport standards (ussailing.org)
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to swim and to lift 40 lbs.; comfortable working outdoors and on the water
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse participants
- Reliable, punctual, and able to commit to scheduled camp dates
- Current California Boater Card (or willingness to obtain)
- Experience teaching students in sailing dinghies and driving safety boats
- If teaching youth, pass Live Scan background check
Responsibilities
- Teach sailing theory and practical sailing skills to beginner to intermediate sailors
- Develop and implement lesson plans that include classroom instruction and on-the-water activities; be prepared to: adapt water activities to inclement weather conditions common to Sausalito, and adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and skill levels
- Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment
- Keep accurate records of attendance, incidents, and equipment or boat damage
- Assist with the maintenance, cleaning, and care of boats, docks, equipment, and facility grounds
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of SCBC policies, procedures, and Emergency Management Plans, and ensure compliance by participants
- Take initiative in completing assigned duties and supporting overall camp operations
- Assist in site and boat preparation prior to each day of instruction
- Use all equipment safely and in accordance with established procedures
