Regional Organizer – Long Island

Position Summary

The Long Island Regional Organizer will lead organizing efforts in key areas by recruiting and developing parent leaders, building partnerships with local organizations, expanding NYUC's membership, and implementing statewide organizing campaigns at the regional level. This position requires someone who enjoys meeting new people, building relationships, developing leaders, and creating sustainable organizing structures capable of winning long-term policy change. The organizer will work across multiple counties, helping parents and caregivers become leaders who organize their own communities and shape NYUC's campaigns. This position will report to the Director of Organizing.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and grow a diverse regional membership base of parents, caregivers, would-be parents, grandparents, and community allies through direct outreach, relational organizing, and one-on-one conversations.
• Identify, recruit, and develop grassroots leaders by providing coaching, leadership training, political education, and opportunities to take ownership of campaigns and organizing efforts.
• Plan and implement regional organizing strategies that align with NYUC's statewide campaign goals, including canvasses, rallies, town halls, advocacy days, legislative meetings, and public actions.
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with community organizations, schools, child care providers, labor unions, faith institutions, immigrant organizations, and advocacy coalitions to expand regional power and influence.
• Develop relationships with local and state elected officials -organize and facilitate meetings, leadership training, and events, ensuring accessibility through the provision of childcare, interpretation, translation, and volunteer coordination.
• Utilize digital organizing tools including email, WhatsApp, peer-to-peer texting, social media, virtual meetings, and relational organizing platforms to recruit, engage, and mobilize members.
• Maintain accurate organizing data and track outreach, leadership development, volunteer engagement, and campaign participation to measure progress and improve organizing strategies.
• Collaborate with communications, policy, and organizing staff to provide regional political analysis, strengthen statewide strategy, and contribute to organizational planning and campaign evaluation.

Qualifications

• Minimum three years of community, labor organizing, or equivalent experience
• Demonstrated success recruiting and developing volunteer leaders
• Experience facilitating meetings, trainings
• Strong relationship-building skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication
• Additional language skills preferred but not required
• Experience with databases (i.e EveryAction, VAN, Action Network, Salesforce, or similar)
• Strong project management skills
• Commitment to racial, economic, and gender equity
• Passion for building parent power and advancing universal child care

Travel

This position follows a remote work schedule with regular travel throughout Long Island. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle. Occasional travel required to NYC office location for scheduled retreats and campaign meetings and to Albany for lobby events. Evening and weekend work is expected, but we will allow for time off to compensate for additional hours in order to follow, on average, a 40-hour work week. Travel reimbursement is provided for approved work-related expenses, including personal vehicle use and long-distance transportation.

About New Yorkers United for Child Care

New Yorkers United for Child Care is a movement of parents and would-be parents organizing to build the political power needed to win free universal child care for all. In less than three years, we’ve organized 10,000+ New Yorkers to protect NYC’s universal 3-K and Pre-K from major funding cuts, secured a Pre-K guarantee statewide, and won New York City’s first-ever free child care program for 2-year-olds.

Now, we’re building on these victories to win truly universal, publicly-funded child care for all. To get there, we are expanding our parent and would-be parent base to Long Island. We seek a self-motivated Regional Organizer to build a base of leaders in the Long Island area. The Regional Organizer will recruit new members and conduct training, education, and leadership development among parents and prospective parents in New York. This role involves engaging parent-leaders in local and state campaigns and coalitions related to our mission. The Regional Organizer will plan and facilitate neighborhood and city-wide in-person meetings on weekends—when parents are available—ensuring child care options are provided, and implement ongoing leadership development training throughout the year.
