    About LRIS

    The Legal Referral and Information Service (the “LRIS”) is a public service that exists primarily for the benefit of the general public. We want to help anyone, and especially those people who are in the AAPI community, in need of legal services or advice. While we cannot provide any legal advice or answer any legal questions, the LRIS can refer you to a lawyer who has been screened and selected by the LRIS to provide competent, ethical legal advice and representation, and who has agreed to abide by its rules.     About the Position

    We are seeking a bilingual Intake Coordinator (part time or full time) for this opportunity who can work remotely in a private and professional setting to respond to requests for legal information and assistance from attorneys and members of the public, especially from the AAPI community.

    Essential Areas of Responsibility include, but are not limited to:

    • Respond to communications from the general public, usually via email or phone calls.
    • Triage legal issues and direct clients to participating lawyers and other legal resources.
    • Provide basic legal information to the public.
    • Use entry and retrieval database programs to make attorney referrals.
    • Handle other duties, including research, public relations, marketing and public outreach, as assigned.

    Position Requirements:

    • Provide fluent communication in written and spoken English and Chinese, either Mandarin or Cantonese, with a strong preference for a candidate who can speak both Mandarin and Cantonese.
    • Exercise excellent customer service, phone manner and written/verbal communication skills while maintaining confidential and sensitive telephone interviews with members of the public needing the assistance of a lawyer or direction to a community resource in New York.
    • Handle referral requests from members of the public requesting assistance via email, in writing and occasionally in person.
    • Screen modest means and pro bono applications for client eligibility based on income and case type.
    • Possess intermediate computer skills. Experience with database programs and Microsoft Office Suite or Google Apps preferred.
    • Four-year degree requirement is flexible, as we will also consider candidates who are current undergraduates who have an interest in law or pursuing paralegal studies.
    • Experience with the justice system and with social service networks serving New York preferred.
    • Prior experience managing difficult individuals is a plus
    • Paralegal training preferred.

    Salary range: $17-$20 per hour
