Position Summary
The Program team at Meyer develops, embodies and executes the organization’s grantmaking strategy and community programs. Under the guidance and direction of the Vice President of Impact, the Program team and its two directors ensure that funds dedicated to strengthening and supporting Oregon’s lands and peoples reach neighborhoods, families, entrepreneurs and leaders statewide — in ways that honor community voice and solutions.
The Portfolios Program Director guides and supports a team of six to eight professionals to implement Meyer’s strategic grantmaking. This position is responsible for providing direction and coaching to their team as they manage their work and engage externally. This role serves as a trusted partner for the Strategic Initiatives Program Director, Director of Learning and Grants Management and Director of Communications in building, implementing and learning from Meyer’s program strategy in ways that truly benefit Oregon’s lands and peoples. With an intersectional racial justice lens as a foundation, the Portfolios Program Director will work to achieve five interrelated goals:
- Help provide structure and vision for Meyer’s program portfolios — Our Collective Prosperity, Our Empowered Youth and Our Resilient Places;
- Provide guidance needed to ensure alignment among Meyer’s program areas, the broader impact department and Meyer overall;
- Support the team to achieve the vision, understanding real-time context and centering the needs of community;
- Lead the continued development of key areas of grantee support “beyond the check” including convening, capacity building and technical assistance.
- In partnership with the VP of Impact, help provide vision, structure and oversight for Meyer’s new program related investments initiative.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership and Strategy Development
- Lead Portfolio staff in the creation and shaping of strategic grantmaking frameworks for the Our Resilient Places, Our Collective Prosperity and Our Empowered Youth areas of focus in addition to shared rapid response programs.
- Remove roadblocks to success by setting priorities, allocating resources and fostering development of needed skills, providing effective feedback, coaching and management.
- Ensure Portfolios’ alignment with Meyer's broader transformation to deepen a focus on intersectional racial equity.
- Serve as a liaison to other departments and leaders, build and manage relationships across the organization to support different initiatives.
- Ensure that portfolio staff are actively engaged with grantees as a core part of their work, building a foundation as learners, strategic supporters and problem-solvers.
Management
- Provide guidance, coaching and supervision for three to four direct reports and leadership for a full team of six to seven staff.
- Work with portfolio program officers as they manage planning, staffing and resources in the development of each program area.
- Create an open, collaborative and highly equitable environment for strategy development and decision-making. Make room for diverse opinions and staff from diverse backgrounds and roles to be heard and included.
- Create a climate of responsibility so that team members are supported to take ownership of decisions and results.

- Assist and consult on the creation of external and internal presentations as needed, at times leading them.
- Support and manage the creation, maintenance and improvement of key internal and external processes and initiatives, while ensuring they align with our strategic plan and mission.
Experience and Competencies
- A deep understanding of and alignment with Meyer’s vision, mission and community.
- Proven ability to provide vision and think strategically; to make sense of complex issues and be a creative problem solver; to synthesize material and focus on the essence of an issue and specific opportunities while advancing the big picture.
- Minimum 10 years experience with five or more years of management experience.

- Understanding of and experience with equity and racial justice frameworks that recognize intersectionality and the unique experiences of overlapping identities as a key component to excellent leadership and program development.
- Experience in a complex management and leadership role with direct supervision, performance management, strategic and programmatic planning, and budgetary responsibilities.
