    POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Math Teacher

Saint Ann's School, a non-sectarian K–12 independent school in Brooklyn, NY, is seeking a full-time mathematics teacher. A school that exists to serve talented, intellectually accomplished, and curious students, we seek faculty who are passionate about their subject and able to convey both knowledge and a love of learning to students of a variety of ages. We seek the rare combination of a passionate and experienced mathematician who works well with students across a broad range of ages. The same mathematics department teaches students from 3rd through 12th grade, but this does not mean some of the material covered is “less advanced.” Our students of every age demand a teacher who knows and loves the discipline and can share that enthusiasm with them. We give our youngest students a taste of number theory, combinatorics, and topology, alongside more typical topics.

Saint Ann’s mathematics teachers can count on many resources: topics list for each class, a collection of shared resources, collaborative colleagues, and supportive administrators. However, teachers are expected to tailor their courses according to their own mathematical interests. This creative, exciting work of owning a class requires a deep engagement with the material that in turn is passed on to students. Traditional teaching methods are encouraged as are innovative formats and assessments that reflect the styles and personalities of the teachers and students. Our teachers are committed to working with students from different backgrounds and must be invested in the school’s ongoing DEI work.

At Saint Ann’s School, we do not give grades or use any other form of comparative metric to evaluate students. Instead, twice a year teachers write full page reports on each student’s progress. This is a major undertaking and not for a reluctant writer, but we find our written reports more comprehensive and rewarding than giving grades. The endeavor of analyzing and describing student progress in an equitable way can highlight a great deal about the processes of learning and teaching mathematics.

Extensive knowledge in the field of mathematics is required, though significant self-study is valued as highly as advanced degrees. Some experience working with children is helpful, though prior teaching experience is not a requirement.

    ABOUT SAINT ANN’S SCHOOL

Since its founding in 1965, Saint Ann’s has embraced a commitment to education for its own sake, oriented to the capacities of each individual student and free of the encumbrances of formal grading, prizes, and rankings. At the same time, we are unabashedly committed to excellence in all that we do. With a faculty and staff numbering close to 400, and approximately 1100 students, Saint Ann’s is among the largest and most selective independent schools in New York City. The lives of our graduates speak powerfully to the potential of an education based on these principles to ignite a love of learning and sustain creative energy in every field of endeavor. We accomplish this by bringing together talented teachers with creative and motivated students. Saint Ann’s is committed to centering anti-racism in the life of the school. Seeking to create a community rooted in trust and equity, we invite each other to take risks, pursue knowledge, and celebrate growth.
