About Beyond Literacy (BeLit)
BeLit is Philadelphia's largest adult literacy nonprofit. We pride ourselves on high quality service to over 1500 striving adults annually through cost-free educational services including English language learning, GED-prep, digital literacy, family literacy, and career preparation. ESOL Family Literacy Instructor, Part-Time
The BeLit Family Literacy program serves immigrant parents and caregivers with limited English language skills, helping them to communicate more effectively in English, as well as equipping them with the necessary resources and tools to support their children’s learning to read on grade level. This program seeks to:
- Improve the English language literacy skills of parents/caregiver
- Provide parent education for parents/caregivers to learn the skills they need to support their children’s learning through language and literacy-based activities that are culturally responsive and occur in meaningful settings and routines
- Provide Interactive Literacy Activities for parents/caregivers to learn and support child development through structured play with their children as a family
Responsibilities:
- Teach remote English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) (5 hours/week).
- Teach in-person Parent Education and Interactive Literacy Activities classes (2-4 hours/week).
- Incorporate health literacy, financial literacy, technology skills and workforce skills into lessons.
- Offer engaging, meaningful instruction, resulting in Educational Functioning Level gains for parents/caregivers.
- Conduct PA approved pre and post assessments using CASAS; post-testing according to number of instructional hours.
- Assist in identifying qualified program participants using PA Dept. of Education (PDE) Family Literacy program eligibility requirements.
- Assist parents/caregivers in completing required program forms/questionnaires.
- Submit all required data and reports in a timely fashion.
- Attend biweekly meetings with School Partnerships Manager, monthly All Staff meetings and partner meetings.
- Maintain good working relationship with the host site and work collaboratively with partners, especially as it relates to recruitment of program participants.
- Complete all required professional development and trainings.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field required.
- TESOL certification strongly preferred.
- Two-three years of experience teaching ESOL (preferably to adults) required (may include internships and volunteer positions).
- Experience working with elementary school age children highly desirable.
- Experience working with culturally diverse populations in an urban setting highly desirable.
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish (or another language) highly desirable.
- Experience working with classroom volunteers a plus.
- Demonstrated solid organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Demonstrated intermediate-level or above technology skills.
- Knowledge of ESOL best practices with demonstrated background in successful benchmark attainment of Adult Education Core Outcomes.
- Ability to pass required background checks.
NOTE: All employees must be fully vaccinated by their start date
