    ROLE: BETTER BUILDER® OVERSIGHT COORDINATOR

    LOCATION: AUSTIN

    Workers Defense Project (WDP) is seeking a Better Builder® Oversight Coordinator to lead the monitoring, oversight and certification conducted by Workers Defense. The Better Builder® Program is Workers Defense Project’s innovative social responsibility program developed by construction workers to raise workplace standards and improve the lives of construction workers and their families. Since 2012, the Better Builder® Program has impacted the lives of over 37,000 construction workers in Central Texas. Many workers on Better Builder® sites are receiving certain benefits and standards for the first time in their careers, such as workers compensation coverage, OSHA safety training and a living wage. The program currently monitors these Better Builder® projects through independent third-party Better Builder® accredited monitors.

    THE ROLE IN ACTION:

    • Oversight for Better Builder® sites
      • You will observe Better Builder® accredited worksite monitoring on Better Builder® sites, evaluate worker interviews, and assess workplace conditions
      • You will provide technical assistance and on-site support to third-party and public entities’ accredited monitors
      • You will organize and lead accreditation trainings for new Better Builder® monitors
      • You will conduct payroll reviews, request, collect and archive records and worker interviews
      • You will maintain and update aggregate interview data from Better Builder® third-party monitoring entities
      • You will prepare regular reports in accordance with the Better Builder® Program’s procedures
      • You will lead or support meetings with allies and entities to ensure the proper implementation of Better Builder® Program
    • Member Engagement
      • You will grow the membership base
      • You will engage community in a variety of events that showcase the organization’s campaign work and mission
      • You will develop member leaders in your city by fostering the analysis, knowledge, and skills necessary to participate effectively in campaign and organizing work
      • You will participate in leadership class trainings
      • You will conduct workshops about our campaigns and education of our work as needed by membership
      • You will support with Know Your Rights Presentations
      • You will support with or lead member committees or workgroups
      • You will engage members in the work of the Better Builder® Department to improve standards for construction workers in Texas through Better Builder® workgroups or other member committees
      • You will support in other trainings for members as needed
    • Campaign Participation
      • You will fully engage in campaigns to expand the Better Builder® Program including:
        • Creating and executing campaign plans
        • Engaging members in the work
        • Engaging elected officials and allies
        • Planning and executing actions, meetings or other activities
        • Assist statewide and local efforts to implement Better Builder® policies in surrounding areas
    • Administrative
      • You will work alongside the Better Builder® Director to develop operational processes for various aspects of the program
      • You will prepare all invoices relating to monitoring fees
      • You will represent the organization publicly to partner institutions, funders and the public as needed
      • You will complete administrative functions including evaluations, plans, timesheets, etc.
      • You will support cross-programmatic campaigns, actions, events and meetings
      • You will assist with grassroots fundraising efforts
      • You will participate in organization-wide activities as necessary to carry out the work of Workers Defense

    WHAT YOU’LL BRING*:

    • Fluency in English and Spanish
    • Ability to work irregular hours (evenings and weekends)
    • Excellent written and oral communication
    • Basic computer literacy (PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, slack & Internet)
    • Ability to work independently and juggle multiple responsibilities
    • Ability and flexibility for some in-state and out of state travel
    • Ability to do in person work; going door to door canvassing, going to worksites, leading events or meetings at the office or other locations, conducting presentations or trainings at the office or other locations
    • Ability to drive and operate a vehicle. Will need to transport themselves to meetings, field activities etc.
    • Ability to hold one on one conversations with strangers
    • Ability to speak publicly in small or large group settings
    • OSHA 30 training preferred

    • Workers Defense has a salary scale that is based on experience. Starting salary for the position is $60,000
    • A $1,000 annual language stipend for English-Spanish bilingual staff
    • Workers Defense has a hybrid work schedule; more details can be provided during interview process
    • Employer-paid medical, vision, dental, and life insurance
    • Some of our Paid Time Off Benefits:
      • 2 weeks (9 days) vacation for the first year of employment and 2 weeks (14 days) for the second year of employment and after
      • 10 days of sick leave in a year
      • 5 Personal Days per year
      • Office Closure during 4th of July week, Thanksgiving Week and during Christmas in addition to paid holidays
      • Every other Friday off
    • Retirement plan with company match of 3%
    • Parental leave of 12 weeks paid (after probationary period - 90 days from hire)
