    The Position

    The Director of Facilities and Safety (DFS) is responsible for the security and safety of the Norman Rockwell Museum, buildings and grounds, ensuring a safe and secure environment for NRM collections, visitors, and employees at all times, both during open public hours and when the Museum is closed. The DFS is responsible for appearance and maintenance of all buildings, grounds, and related systems, safety and security equipment. Provides coverage and is available after hours for emergency situations.

    The position establishes an operating and capital maintenance schedule and recommends improvements as needed to ensure a safe, secure and effective environment for the Museum’s art collections and visitor experience. Manages and directs maintenance staff and contracted services; is adept at a range of skills, systems operations, and interacts with all levels of museum personnel and external constituents, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and support.

    Under the direction of the COO/CFO, the DFS is responsible for the development, maintenance, and implementation of all safety policies and procedures. The DFS supervises the Security and Safety Manager and a team of security officers and facilities personnel.

    The DFS is a member of the Executive Team, Operations Team, and leads the Safety Team.

    The Museum is open to the public year-round six days per week from 10:00am to 5:00pm; 4:00 pm during winter season, and for numerous evening programs and events. Director of Facilities and Safety must ensure facilities and security staff coverage and be willing to work during peak days, weekends, and evening events as needed. The Museum welcomes on average 120,000 visitors annually, with peak visitation months July – October. Responsibilities are 24 hours with the ability to respond to necessary situations at all times is essential

    Responsibilities

    Leadership and Strategy

    • Recruit, train, and manage facilities staff and Manager of Security and Safety
    • Together with Director of Visitor Experience, ensure teams are adhering to the museum’s customer service standards.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and promote professional development.
    • Guide the Manager of Security and Safety to ensure security officers are trained, reviewed, and scheduled effectively.
    • Establish policies and procedures for safety, security, and facilities management.
    • Collaborate with curatorial, exhibition, and event teams to ensure safety and security measures align with operational needs.
    • Regularly review and update policies to align with industry standards.
    • Work with COO/CFO to develop and manage budgets for safety, security, facilities operations, and capital investment.
    • Prioritize projects and allocate resources effectively.
    • Lead Safety Team consisting of representatives from curatorial, operations, security, and others as needed to conduct regular risk assessments and mitigate potential issues.
    • Ensure all incidents are addressed and documented, maintaining detailed records for insurance or legal purposes.
    • Maintain relationships with local authorities, fire departments, and emergency management organizations.
    • Works with COO and development on fund-raising and grant opportunities for facilities management.
    • Performs other tasks as needed or assigned.

    Safety and Security

    • Implement safety policies and procedures to protect staff, visitors, and contractors.
    • Conduct regular safety training, including emergency evacuation procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulatory standards.
    • Oversee security operations, including surveillance systems, access controls, and alarm systems.
    • Develop and enforce procedures for after-hours security and restrict access to sensitive areas.
    • Continually review and update Disaster Preparedness Plan for various scenarios.
    • Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency responders.
    • Ensure training documentation and procedures are in place for security officers.
    • Responsible for the proper operation of all equipment used in the facilities. This includes proper training and certifications if applicable and use of safety equipment such as hearing protection, eye and head protection, etc.

    Facilities Management

    • Oversee improvements, maintenance, repair, safety, and operation of the museum’s physical infrastructure, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, alarm, and fire prevention systems.
    • Develop and implement a facility management program including preventive maintenance and life-cycle requirements with special attention to the requirements when caring for historic structures
    • Works with curatorial team on preservation and maintenance of Norman Rockwell’s Studio, which is considered a collection item
    • Develop and maintain up-to-date capital maintenance and equipment maintenance schedules.
    • Manage seasonal and routine cleaning, landscaping, snow removal, and pest control, ensuring safety and cleanliness of buildings and pristine grounds.
    • Ensure compliance with building codes and accessibility standards.
    • Oversee third-party contractors for specialized maintenance and construction projects.
    • Negotiate service contracts and ensure quality standards are met.
    • Develop strategies to improve energy efficiency and promote sustainable practices.
    • Manage capital maintenance projects and contracting.
    • Oversees the efficient operation and layout of the Museum’s offsite warehouse functions working closely with departments to coordinate space allocations.

    Qualifications

    • Understanding of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.) and preventative maintenance practices
    • Proficiency in budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation
    • Ability to develop policies, write routine correspondence, procedures, and reports
    • Good organizational skills

    Experience/Education

    Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 5 to 7 years of progressive experience in facilities management, safety, and security, preferably in an institution with similar environments.

    Proven experience managing teams and supervising contractors or vendors. Demonstrated success in creating and implementing safety and emergency response plans. Experience working with security technology, including surveillance systems, access control, and alarm systems.

    Physical and Additional Requirements:

    Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted (e.g. moving equipment, supplies, or furniture). Occasionally handle heavier objects with appropriate tools or assistance. Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously for extended periods during inspections, emergencies, or events. Capacity to navigate tight spaces, including crawlspaces, attics, and mechanical rooms. Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and stairs as needed to inspect facilities or oversee/perform maintenance. Comfortable working in various environments, including outdoor settings, mechanical rooms, and temperature-controlled areas. Able to perform a wide variety of general and skilled activities, i.e carpentry, painting, and miscellaneous repairs is essential.

    Compensation and Job Grade

    Grade 16, Exempt Status

    Full time, 1 weekend day/month
