    Primary Responsibility: Outreach to community members/organizations and union members about STEP’s programs

    Secondary Responsibilities: Depending on your skills, secondary responsibilities may include teaching or teaching assistant for adult ESOL classes, assisting with employment support classes for English language learners, resume creation for participants, social media.

    Remote/in office: Majority of time in office or visiting work sites or partner sites

    Some evenings and/or weekend days each month are expected

    Education: B. A. or higher

    Experience: Not for profit, or workforce development experience, or community/grassroots organizing

    STEP (Service Workers Training and Education Partnership) is the training fund for UNITE HERE Local 23, and its partner employers that provide subcontracted food service and hospitality to large institutions throughout the D.C. metropolitan and Richmond area. STEP contributes to sustainable food industry jobs by providing front line food workers with the training and educational support to move up the career ladder, so that they can create better futures for themselves, their families, and communities. STEP provides free IE&T programs for hospitality workers seeking employment (integrating job skills and English language education), and, free culinary skills, food safety certifications, and language and life skills classes, to union members. The vast majority of our participants are people of color and/or immigrants from diverse communities.

    Job Description

    The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for driving the program’s recruitment by engaging union members and relevant community organizations and providers, educating them about STEP’s training opportunities and educational benefits. The majority of your time will be spent making and maintaining relationships with community organizations for mutual referrals, attending union events and going to union sites to engage members, and conducting initial intake with applicants for our programs. Since job seekers and a significant number of STEP’s union participants are speakers of languages other than English, someone who has worked with immigrant communities, is preferred.

    This role requires a dynamic individual with a high level of organization and drive, excellent presentation skills, ability to form and manage good relationships with community partners and individual applicants from diverse backgrounds and communities. STEP is a small organization: we are seeking someone adaptable, flexible, and comfortable with change.

    Key Responsibilities

    Outreach & Community Engagement (65% - 70% of time)

      • Conduct outreach to community partners and union members through emails, phone calls, texts, social media, and in-person presentations and site visits.
      • Track recruitment and engagement results, suggesting new potential avenues for recruitment
      • Suggest or execute materials for engagement, using established CANVA templates and creation or modification of existing materials
      • Serve as the primary contact for interested applicants to job programs
      • Respond to and track online applications from participants
      • Respond to emails from community partners
      • Conduct initial intake interviews for job entry participants and assist with interviews
      • Plan and assist with logistics for any community events, including recruitment, on site check in or registrations, and follow up
      • Assist with registration at classes
      • Conduct file audits to ensure participant information has been correctly recorded
      • Assist with database entry

    Additional responsibilities (30% - 35% of time)

    Depending on your skills and experience you may be asked to:

    • Teach or assistant teach ESOL as part of job seekers or union member classes
    • Help with design of curricula and lesson plans for employment support lessons for English language learners
    • Assist with resume creation for STEP’s job seekers under direction of Employment Support lead
    • Assist with 1:1 job interview practice as part of job seekers support programs
    • Using community partner knowledge and relationships, provide referrals for STEP participants in need of social services assistance
    • Other support and tasks in areas of office administration or program logistics, including database entry and management

    Qualifications

      • Education: B.A or higher preferred (education from outside North America considered)
      • Work Experience: 2+ years of work with not for profit in workforce, human services, or in adult instruction, or in community organizing initiatives
      • Languages: strongly prefer candidate with Spanish language skills
      • Excellent English (written and spoken) requiredAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team
      • Cultural awareness and competency in engaging diverse community members
      • Proficiency in CRM systems and social media platforms a big plus

    Additional Requirements

      • Occasional travel will be required (Richmond, Norfolk, and other locations in Georgia, South Carolina, Florida)
      • Authorized to work in the United States
      • Availability to work evenings and weekends (primarily Saturdays) for events and to assist with registration is a must
      • Valid driver’s license required
      • This position may be subject to a background check
