Job description
The Part Time Staff Accountant will support accurate financial reporting and month-end close activities, including reconciliations, journal entries, and GAAP-compliant financial statements, in a collaborative nonprofit environment. Working closely with colleagues in the Finance & Administration team, they will help to strengthen financial processes, support budgeting and audits, and ensure clarity and integrity in financial data.
Hours: Part Time (~20 hours per week), mostly remote with 1-2 days in the office per month. Daily work hours are flexible, provided there is sufficient overlap with core team availability.
Salary: $38 - $44 per hour
Reports to: Director of Finance & Administration
Responsibilities
- Support accurate and timely reconciliations of all bank and investment accounts at each period-end.
- Assist with reviewing and reconciling the monthly Trial Balance to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness of financial data.
- Contribute to and prepare monthly financial reports, including the Statements of Activities and Statement of Financial Position, in compliance with U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Support the verification and reconciliation of net assets with and without donor restrictions, ensuring adherence to donor intent and reporting requirements.
- Generate and support the import of payroll and benefit journal entries, including related accruals, into the accounting system.
- Assist with the annual budget planning, the creation of financial forecasts, and explanations for budget-to-actual and forecast variances.
- Participate in cross-training and provide support to Finance & Administration team members to foster a collaborative and efficient working environment.
- Help maintain and update the documented system of accounting policies and procedures to ensure clarity, consistency, and compliance.
- Recommend improvements to systems, policies, and procedures to enhance transparency, efficiency, and workflow effectiveness.
- Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director and the Assistant Executive Director.
Qualifications/Experience
- 7+ years of experience
- Related experience required; nonprofit financial and net asset accounting preferred
- Bachelor's degree in accounting required
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Garber & Associates (SGA) a plus; experience with Saleforce a plus
- Excellent internal communication and customer service skills
- Ability to summarize monthly financial data in narrative form for internal and external reports a plus
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Self-starter, collaborative, and proactive problem solver
