Position Summary:
The Student Support Specialist is a part-time position responsible for supporting students and teens who participate in Gateways’ Accessible Hebrew School on Sundays. Students in the Gateways Hebrew School range in age from 5 to 18 and have a variety of special educational needs. The Student Support Specialist will support the learning and behavior of the students in the program and provide oversight and coaching to the teen volunteers who support the students. The position reports to the Teen Volunteer Coordinator. The Accessible Hebrew School meets on Sundays in Newton, MA from 9:15 am to 1:45 pm during the school year, excluding Jewish holidays and public school vacations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the implementation of learning and behavioral strategies for students attending Gateways’ Accessible Hebrew School
- Supervise teens working with students in partnership with the Teen Volunteer Coordinator, and provide coaching and support as needed during the program.
- Respond to crises and other challenging incidents as needed, and complete any necessary documentation.
- Meet regularly with the Teen Volunteer Coordinator to review plans and goals for students.
- Be on site on Sunday mornings by 30 minutes prior to first scheduled session on class days.
- Participate in scheduled sessions (9:30-11:00 am and 12:00-1:30 pm) with meeting time in between as needed.
- Support teachers with classroom set-up and clean-up.
- Participate in mandatory program staff meetings and volunteer trainings as scheduled throughout the year (calendar provided in advance of each school year).
- Perform other duties as requested by the Assistant Director of the Gateways Accessible Hebrew School.
Qualifications
- BA/BS in special education or related field
- Experience working with students with disabilities
- Knowledge of Jewish holidays, customs, and traditions; ability to read Hebrew preferred but not required
- Enjoy working with children
Salary:
$250-350 per weekly Sunday session based on qualifications and experience.
