The Senior Accountant supports the company mission by serving as a key member of the Finance Department responsible for organization‑wide accounting, financial analysis, audit preparation, and reporting. This role works closely with the Controller, Staff Accountant, and Senior Accounts Payable Clerk and serves as a critical liaison between Finance, Fundraising/Development, and external auditors. The Senior Accountant plays an important role in ensuring financial accuracy, transparency, strong internal controls, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards while supporting data‑driven decision‑making across the organization.
Role & Responsibilities:
- Support the day‑to‑day accounting operations of a multi‑location, $55M nonprofit organization
- Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger activity
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
- Assist in maintaining strong internal controls and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Prepare financial analyses, schedules, and reports to support management decision-making
- Support budget monitoring, variance analysis, and financial forecasting activities
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and internal management reports
- Lead and coordinate audit preparation activities, including schedules, reconciliations, and documentation
- Serve as a primary point of contact for external auditors in coordination with the Controller
- Support preparation of materials for regulatory filings, funders, and other stakeholders as needed
- Partner with the Fundraising/Development team to ensure accurate accounting and reporting of restricted and unrestricted contributions
- Support reconciliation and reporting related to grants, donor‑restricted funds, and fundraising activity
- Assist in ensuring compliance with donor restrictions and reporting requirements
- Work closely with the Staff Accountant and Senior Accounts Payable Clerk to promote accurate, timely, and efficient accounting processes
- Provide guidance and financial insight to internal departments as needed
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and financial transparency
Qualifications & Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
- Minimum of 4–6 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a nonprofit or multi‑entity organization
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience supporting audits and working directly with external auditors
- Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines
- Advanced Excel skills required; experience with accounting or ERP systems preferred
