    Organization Description

    The Miss Major Alexander L. Lee TGIJP Black Trans Cultural Center is a team of transgender, gender-variant and intersex people, inside and outside of prisons, jails, detention centers, and other locked facilities creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom. We work in collaboration with others to forge a culture of resistance and resilience to strengthen us for the fight against human rights abuses, imprisonment, police violence, racism, poverty, and societal pressures. We seek to create a world rooted in self-determination, freedom of expression, and gender justice.

    Position Description

    Reentry Case Managers at TGIJP are expected to provide comprehensive case management services to clients experiencing injustice within the prison industrial complex. This role involves assessing client needs, developing action plans, advocating for client rights, and connecting clients with appropriate resources and services. Reentry Case Managers must be dedicated, detail-oriented professionals with deep commitments to supporting, uplifting, and securing the freedom and leadership of Black and brown transgender, gender-variant, and intersex people.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Case Management and Documentation

    • Complete accurate and up-to-date tracking and case notes of all reentry clients and mail in a shared spreadsheet.
    • Develop effective care plans with the rest of the Programming staff (Housing, Legal, and Wellness).
    • Coordinate referrals for professional development, workforce readiness, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, financial assistance, food assistance, and other supportive programs and basics needs resources.
    • Submit weekly progress reports to the Director of Programs.
    • Complete required documentation for program reporting and compliance purposes.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Inside Correspondence

    • Provide detailed, informative, and caring replies to all reentry mail TGIJP receives from those living inside of prisons, jails, detention centers, and other locked facilities.
    • Maintain a legal and reentry mailing list of clients who receive every edition of our Stiletto magazine.
    • Develop and update reentry community resource guides.
    • Reply to calls, texts, and other messages from our currently incarcerated community members.
    • Coordinate with TGIJP’s Communications Director to ensure inclusion of updated Stiletto magazines in our outgoing mail.

    Event Planning

    • Co-lead TGIJP’s monthly Ricky Blue-Sky Mail Nights with our Legal Case Manager.
    • Coordinate in-person visits to our incarcerated clients as directed.

    Community Care

    • Empower clients to self-advocate and navigate reentry systems independently.
    • Promote client empowerment and self-sufficiency through skill-building and education.
    • Provide court support to any TGIJP clients who request accompaniment to their court proceedings.
    • Work with TGIJP’s Communications Director to ensure timely promotion of events (clinics, Mail Nights, workshops, etc.).
    • Attend recurring meetings with our allied coalitions and campaign leaders in TAG, the SB 132 Coalition, CATPA, ACLU, etc.
    • Ensure client confidentiality & privacy in accordance with agency policies & regulations.

    Qualifications:

    Education: Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Law, Legal Studies, Legal Support and Services, Social Work, or related field preferred.

    Experience: Previous community organizing and/or case management experience and knowledge of the prison industrial complex required. Previous experience in social services or reentry advocacy strongly preferred.

    Skills:

    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
    • Ability to build rapport and establish trusting relationships with diverse populations.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Commitment to social justice, equity, and anti-oppressive practices.
    • Proficiency in Google Suite and database management.

    Working Conditions:

    • This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours to accommodate client needs.
