    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Gallery Director, Curator of Exhibitions & Programs functions as an ambassador for The Art Students League in the realm of galleries, museums, and cultural institutions and is expected to make themselves present as much as possible. The position has overall responsibility for leadership of The League’s gallery exhibitions and programs, its permanent collection, and the Gallery/Exhibitions staff.

    Working closely with the Artistic/Executive Director, the Gallery Director is responsible for organizing and executing an annual Instructor Salon exhibition, 1-2 collection-based curated exhibitions, quarterly rotating lobby exhibitions, and a minimum of four exhibitions of exceptional student work annually installed either at The League or an offsite location. This position also invites visiting curators and speakers and oversees The League’s talks program as well as external exhibitions programs.

    In addition, this role is responsible for the stewardship of the League’s permanent collection of more than two thousand objects spanning the 19thCentury to the present, with a goal of making it accessible to the public and expanding the collection through donations.

    JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

    Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

    • Oversee and curate an active program of student, instructor, and collection exhibitions for presentation in The League’s Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, lobby, registration, and café areas, including the writing of exhibition related text.
    • Responsible for coordinating and executing exhibitions in the lobby, registration, and café areas.
    • Manage and contribute to the production of League related exhibitions catalogues 1 -2 times
    • per year, including image rights, document gathering and editing.
    • Hire and manage external curators, as needed.
    • Work closely with the gallery staff to ensure they are in sync with exhibition goals and schedules and give guidance and support as needed.
    • Manage and give creative and strategic guidance to the gallery staff regarding the programming of League activities.
    • Grow the Permanent Collection and work with The League’s Director of Development to help foster new donations and handle new donation offers.
    • Work with the gallery staff and the Head of Research & Archives to develop a strategy for managing The League’s Permanent Collection and The League archives as they exist in both database and in storage.
    • Develop and manage all gallery and collection budgets.
    • Work collaboratively and effectively with instructors, students, staff, and the ASL community.
    • Work collaboratively with Development on grants and fundraising initiatives.
    • Present donation offers to the Board of Control Collections Committee, with appropriate research.

    UNIQUE REQUIREMENTS OF THIS JOB:

      • Recognized experience in an art gallery, museum, school, or similar organization
      • Extensive experience with exhibition organization and coordination
      • Excellent written, communication, and interpersonal skills
      • Ability to manage staff and to work as part of a larger, coordinated team
      • Some evening and weekend hours may be required

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS

    Degree(s) Required/Preferred:

    MA in art/art history; PhD preferred

    Years of Experience Desired:

    5-7+ years’ experience in an art gallery, museum, or similar organization.

    Industry or Product Knowledge:

    Gallery, Museum, and/or Art School experience required

    Computer Experience:

    Microsoft office, knowledge of collection management software

    Core Skills/Abilities Required:

    3-4+ years exhibition management experience
