Staff Attorney – Full-Time or Part-Time
Primarily Remote | Flexible Schedule | Philadelphia, PA
The Veterans Law Center (VLC) is a nonprofit law firm providing free legal services to low-income veterans. We help veterans obtain VA disability benefits, correct unjust military discharges, prevent eviction and housing instability, clear criminal records, and overcome other legal barriers to stability.
VLC is looking for an attorney to join our growing team. We are open to both full-time and part-time candidates and are willing to structure the position around the right person.
This position is a great fit for an attorney who wants to do meaningful, client-centered legal work while having flexibility and a supportive team. VLC is a small, collaborative organization where attorneys have significant responsibility for their cases without being expected to figure everything out on their own. We regularly work together to develop case strategies, troubleshoot difficult issues, and support one another. Our attorneys have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with clients and see the real-world impact of their advocacy. And because we are a small and growing organization, attorneys have a voice in how we approach our work and opportunities to help shape and improve our programs.
We welcome applicants at different stages of their careers, including newer attorneys looking to build strong advocacy skills and experienced attorneys seeking meaningful work with greater flexibility. Prior veterans law experience is not required; we provide the training and supervision needed to develop expertise in this area. We also believe that public interest work should be sustainable over the long term. VLC operates primarily remotely, with significant flexibility in how attorneys structure their workdays. Full-time employees receive generous paid time off and holidays, and paid sabbaticals are available to long-tenured employees. In-person work is required for court appearances, legal clinics, staff meetings, and other client needs in the Philadelphia area.
What You'll Do
- Provide legal advice and direct representation to veterans in matters involving VA disability benefits, military discharge upgrades, landlord-tenant disputes, criminal record clearing, and other civil legal issues
- Meet with veterans to understand their goals, identify legal issues, and develop strategies tailored to their individual circumstances
- Investigate and develop cases by reviewing records, gathering evidence, conducting legal research, and working with clients and other service providers
- Prepare persuasive legal briefs, personal statements, correspondence, and other advocacy documents
- Negotiate with landlords, opposing counsel, government agencies, and other parties to resolve client matters
- Represent veterans in eviction court proceedings and administrative hearings as needed
- Participate in regularly occurring legal clinics, Know Your Rights presentations, and trainings
- Work collaboratively with VLC attorneys, paralegals, legal assistants, and community partners to provide high-quality, coordinated services
What We're Looking For
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the Pennsylvania Bar, or eligibility to waive into the Pennsylvania Bar
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and communication skills
- Strong initiative and the ability to work independently on assignments while recognizing when to seek input or assistance
- Resourcefulness
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines
- A collaborative approach and willingness to support colleagues as part of a small team
- Patience, empathy, and an ability to build trust with clients who may be experiencing significant stress or instability
- A genuine interest in serving veterans and learning new areas of law
Experience in veterans law, housing law, legal services, or another public-interest practice is welcome, but not required. We know that strong candidates do not always meet every qualification listed in a job posting. If this work interests you and you believe you could be a good addition to our team, we encourage you to apply.
Compensation, Benefits & Flexibility
VLC is open to both full-time and part-time arrangements.
Full-time: Salary of $67,500–$90,000, depending on relevant experience. Full-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage; short- and long-term disability insurance; 403(b) retirement plan; generous paid time off and holidays; paid sabbatical opportunities for long-tenured employees, and primarily remote work with flexibility in structuring the workday.
Part-time: Approximately 20–25 hours per week, with flexibility in scheduling. Compensation is $35–$50 per hour, depending on relevant experience.
How to Apply
Please submit a resume and brief cover letter sharing your interest in VLC’s work and letting us know whether you are seeking a full-time position, a part-time position, or are open to either. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and the position will remain open until we find the right candidate.
