Literations is seeking a Fractional Marketing Manager to execute and elevate the organization's marketing and communications efforts. This role reports to the Senior Development Manager, and is responsible for translating organizational priorities into compelling content, consistent branding, measurable audience engagement, and authentic storytelling captured directly from our program sites.
This is a 1099 contractor position averaging 10–15 hours per week, with a hybrid arrangement that includes monthly visits to program sites during the school year (December through May) for photography and volunteer testimonial collection.
A note on seasonal rhythm: Literations' literacy program operates during the school year. The fractional marketer's work will naturally shift between a preparation and planning focus during the summer months (July through September) and a heavier execution and content-capture focus during the school year (October through June).
Core Responsibilities
Communications & Content (Approximately 30% of time)
- Draft and design digital mailers, including quarterly newsletters and campaign-specific email blasts (Back to School, Holiday Appeal, Lighting the Spark), using Constant Contact and Canva
- Collaborate with contracted graphic design support on the Annual Report, beginning content collection from multiple departments and planning during the summer months
- Maintain and grow the Volunteer Testimonial Bank through direct collection at program site visits (see Site Visits below) and ongoing coordination with the program team
Social Media & Digital Presence (Approximately 25% of time)
- Develop monthly social media content calendars across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- Create 2x weekly social media graphics using Canva
- Schedule all posts in Metricool
- Engage with the audience weekly (responding to comments, liking/sharing relevant content, fostering community)
- Monitor Google Ad Grant performance and provide monthly analytics summaries with recommendations
Brand & Visual Assets (Approximately 15% of time)
- Coordinate bi-yearly professional photoshoots, including scheduling, shot lists, and vendor communication
- Capture photography at program sites during monthly visits (see Site Visits below)
- Manage website content updates
- Design recruitment flyers and other print/digital collateral
Program Site Visits & Storytelling (Approximately 10% of time)
- December through May: Visit 2 program sites per month (approximately 3 hours in a single day each month) to photograph literacy sessions and collect testimonials from volunteer literacy coaches
- Goal: Visit 12 of our 17 program sites by the end of the school year
- October through December: Coordinate with the program team to ensure student permission slips are collected from site team leaders in advance of photography visits
- Use captured photos and testimonials to fuel social media, newsletters, and campaign materials throughout the year
Committee & Meeting Participation (Approximately 10% of time)
- Serve as the staff liaison for the Board Marketing Committee (virtual meetings are quarterly)
- Prepare agendas, talking points, and post-meeting summaries for Marketing Committee meetings
- Attend a virtual weekly 30-minute check-in with the Senior Development Manager
- Attend a virtual monthly 60-minute strategy session with the Senior Development Manager and Executive Director
PR, Advocacy & Strategic Support (Approximately 5% of time)
- Draft press releases, media pitches, and advocacy statements as opportunities arise
- Contribute to the overall marketing strategy in collaboration with the Senior Development Manager
Qualifications
- 6+ years of experience in marketing, communications, or a related field (nonprofit experience required)
- Degree in marketing, communications, or a related field preferred
- Passion for educational equity and comfort working within a mission-driven organization
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple content streams and meet deadlines independently
- Proficiency with Constant Contact (or comparable email marketing platform), Canva, Metricool (or comparable social scheduling tool), and Google Analytics
- Strong writing skills with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences (donors, volunteers, families, general public)
- Photography skills sufficient for capturing authentic, on-the-ground program moments (professional-grade not required; strong smartphone or DSLR photography is fine)
- Comfort interviewing older adult volunteers, elementary students, and distilling their stories into compelling written testimonials
- Familiarity with Google Ad Grants is a plus
- Reliable transportation for monthly program site visits across the Boston and Metrowest area
Benefícios
Expected workload: 10–15 hours per week depending on the time of year, with busier months (December, March, April) trending closer to 15 hours per week and quieter summer months trending closer to 10 hours per week
- Based on a 50-week schedule (Literations closes for one week in December and one week in July)
Scheduling: Literations operates Monday–Thursday, 8am–6pm, and Friday, 9am–5pm. All meetings and program site visits are expected to occur during these hours.
- The contractor has autonomy to concentrate Literations work into two consistent days per week, leaving the remaining days available for other freelance clients. The specific two-day schedule can be determined around a routine that works for the contractor.
- During busier periods of the year (notably December, March, and April, and in the lead-up to major campaigns and events), additional flexibility beyond the usual two working days may be required to meet deadlines.
Ownership of work product: All deliverables created in the course of this engagement, including written content, photography, graphic designs, video, social media assets, and any other creative materials, are the sole property of Literations. The contractor agrees that all such work product is created as work made for hire and assigns all rights, title, and interest to Literations. Specific terms will be detailed in the contractor agreement.
