About the Role
The Head of Communications owns Evitable's communications function and sets our communications strategy. You will lead the development of our public narrative, with the Executive Director holding sign-off on major positioning and our highest-stakes public moments, and with support from the Head of Movement Building. You will build and run all communications operations, either personally or through delegation, and you will decide how Evitable shows up in a contested media space.
This is a role that requires an ability to build from scratch. The ideal candidate has set communications strategy independently before and is energized by owning the call rather than executing someone else's brief. Evitable aims to rapidly build public power around what we believe is the most consequential issue in human history, so creative and daring approaches are vital.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and narrative
- Design and own Evitable's communications strategy, including narrative development and message testing.
- Prepare and support the ED and other spokespeople for public engagements.
Media and press
- Oversee relationships with journalists, editors, and media outlets relevant to Evitable's mission, including those covering AI, technology policy, labor, civil rights, and grassroots movements.
- Establish rapid response processes that position Evitable at the forefront of breaking news stories.
Movement communications
- Work alongside the Head of Movement Building to align public communications with organizing strategy and coalition relationships.
- Develop materials for organizers and partners who may not be AI specialists.
Brand and digital
- Manage Evitable's brand identity and digital presence, testing and optimising content across platforms.
- Coordinate production of video, written content, and special projects.
Organizational
- As the organization grows, help scope, hire, and manage junior communications roles.
What We Are Looking For
Essential:
- Has built a communications function and set its strategic direction from scratch, operating with high autonomy rather than waiting for direction.
- Exceptional communication skills, adaptable to a wide range of audiences and mediums.
- Experience developing and testing narratives and running successful media campaigns.
- A strong professional network in areas of communication relevant to Evitable, including: media, publicity, branding, design, content production, marketing, and social media.
- Genuine alignment with Evitable's mission.
Preferred candidates will have:
- Experience in communications for movements, campaigns, or political advocacy.
- Experience navigating tensions between different or competing framings of an issue, including bipartisan messaging.
- Experience working in adversarial media environments.
- Experience recruiting and managing people.
- Understanding of the AI risk landscape or related areas (e.g. tech policy, privacy).
- Innovative approaches to tracking news cycles and shifts in public opinion at scale.
