Seeking Substitute Teachers
At Freedom Side School we provide a free education rooted in abolitionist values to children impacted by incarceration. We nurture our students as visionaries, organizers, and architects of a more free world. We are currently seeking applicants for our team of Substitute Teachers.

Hiring Timeline and Process
- Interested applicants should fill out this application form;
- Interviews will be conducted over zoom or in person, depending on candidate and staff availability;
- Applicants who are a good fit will be onboarded as a member of the FSS Substitute Teacher Team;
- Candidates who are invited to join Freedom Side School’s Substitute Teacher Team will be asked to obtain the clearances required by PA school law as a part of their onboarding process;
- Once onboarded, FSS Substitute Teachers will be notified of any dates where coverage is needed with as much advance notice as possible.
Job Description
Classroom staff are integral to translating our mission and vision into action by shaping day-to-day school life for our students and their caregivers. Substitute Teachers will work closely with FSS staff while on assignment and will be supervised by our Director of Teaching and Learning.
- Our school day runs from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm
- Our day-rate for substitute teachers is $240 per day

We are prioritizing candidates who…
- Are directly impacted by mass incarceration, including candidates who are formerly incarcerated or have incarcerated loved ones
- Have experience in the anti-prison and/or abolition movement
- Have community organizing experience or are willing to learn
