    The Program Manager provides administrative, operational, and managerial support for the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District, a fiscally sponsored project of the SF LGBT Center. The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District strives to preserve, sustain, and promote the rich cultural legacy of the Castro and its significance to San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ community and beyond. Our commitment is to highlight the structures and sites important to our history; foster racial, ethnic, gender and cultural diversity among residents and businesses; and create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ people and allied communities to visit the Castro and call it home.

    The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District operates under the leadership of an Advisory Board, which decides on policy issues and provides volunteer hours to implement programming in these areas: Tenant Protection, Land Use, Economic & Workforce Development, Cultural Heritage Conservation, Cultural Competency, and Arts & Culture.

    The Program Manager will be passionate about supporting community building and community organizing for underserved and marginalized LGBTQ populations. They will be a pragmatic problem-solver and a team player, with excellent communication skills and meticulous attention to detail. The Program Manager will assist with the administrative, community outreach, and operational responsibilities for the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District.

    As a guiding principle, the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District is committed to promoting racial, gender, and LGBTQ equity. We are seeking a Program Manager who is also committed to these values. This position will be supervised by the Cultural District Director. Applicants must submit a resume. A cover letter is highly recommended (optional). No other documents will be accepted.

    Responsibilities:

    • Work with the Cultural District Director to support the goals of the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District;
    • Plan, implement, and evaluate coalition building and community organizing efforts for a California legislative proposal lobbying project;
    • Help the Cultural District Director represent the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District at public, governmental, and coalition building meetings, and assist the Cultural District Director who serves as the lead spokesperson for the District;
    • Provide leadership with fundraising efforts including grants and fundraising efforts with individual giving;
    • Work with City departments to improve Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity data collection;
    • Help develop, maintain, and promote positive relationships with the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District’s diverse range of community partners and local government departments and offices; and
    • Attend select advisory board and committee meetings, helping the Cultural District Director prepare and provide information necessary for the advisory board to make informed and effective decisions.

    Program Administration & Operations:

    • Assist the Cultural District Director to implement administration and operations that will improve the vitality and resilience of the District and the LGBTQ+ community in the Castro and beyond;
    • Contribute to the implementation of the Cultural Heritage, Housing and Economic Stabilization Strategy (CHHESS) report. This includes areas such as Cultural Heritage Conservation, Land Use, Tenant Protection, Arts and Culture, Cultural Competency, and Economic and Workforce Development.
    • Implement day-to-day administration and operations, including assistance with contract and grants reporting, development and tracking of budgets, and other related administrative tasks;
    • Help schedule meetings for the Cultural District Director; and
    • Help coordinate contractors, consultants, volunteers, and vendors.

    Qualifications:

    • Mastery of writing and editing text (using Word or google docs), presentations (using Powerpoint or google presentations), and proofreading;
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team player;
    • Values alignment with the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District mission and framework (racial, gender, and LGBTQ equity);
    • Experience working with diverse stakeholders and LGBTQ+ community is mandatory;
    • Proven track record in the areas of administrative tasks and community engagement;
    • Demonstrated ability to active listening and learning;
    • Familiarity with the Castro, its history, stakeholders, and relevant community issues/ needs (residence in the Castro District is not required);
    • Familiarity with social media (Instagram and Facebook), newsletter production (using Mailchimp), basic design (using Canva) and budgeting (using Excel or google sheets);
    • Flexibility, social emotional intelligence, and conflict management skills;
    • Familiarity with wordpress preferred;
    • Experience supporting nonprofit boards is preferred; and
    • A bachelor’s or advanced degree is not required for this position, though any degree, particularly in areas of English, communication, or any related area of study would be an asset for this position.

    The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District does not rent office space though we do occasionally rent space for in-person meetings and gatherings.

    The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District is a fiscally sponsored project of the SF LGBT Center, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The Castro LGBTQ Cultural District is independently operated by an advisory board composed of volunteers elected from the community. However, all employees of the Castro LGBTQ Cultural District are employees of the SF LGBT Center and are subject to the Center’s employment policies and procedures.
