    Solar United Neighbors (SUN) is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to creating a clean, equitable, resilient energy system that benefits everyone. We help people go solar, join together, and fight for their energy rights.

    Scope of Work

    SUN is looking for a Community Ambassador to join our team as a 1099 contractor. In this role, you will support our Power Up Ellis county project and represent SUN in Ellis County, TX.

    This is a 1099 contractor position with flexible hours, and some weekend and evening availability may be required depending on event schedules. The position offers $32-$40 per hour with a range of 10 - 20 hours per week from August 2026 - January 2027, along with mileage reimbursement for transportation to and from events.

    The Community Ambassador provides support for SUN’s Power Up Ellis County project by building and strengthening partner relationships, helping with community outreach, and engaging with potential and confirmed program recipients. They will also help to deploy solar and battery storage systems to participants in the county. They will serve as an enthusiastic ambassador for Solar United Neighbors and be our on-the-ground liaison for this project.

    Responsibilities include:

    Community Engagement and Outreach :

    • Work with the state team to identify, build and maintain partnerships that help promote programs and serve participant needs.
    • Promote the overall project and solar education in the local and regional communities through regular communications, tabling opportunities, or public speaking events.
    • Attend in-person or virtual community meetings as needed that support program goals.
    • Assist with event logistics, including setting up and breaking down materials for tabling
    • Help inform outreach materials to ensure culturally relevant and accessible to the area.
    • Engage in one-on-one conversations to explain the benefits of going solar and answer basic questions about SUN and Power Up Ellis
    • Collect sign-ups from interested participants and provide follow-up resources.
    • Connect program recipients to storytelling and engagement opportunities with SUN if needed.
    • Work with communications to support program recipients with media engagement if needed.

    Program Coordination and Deployment Support :

    • Help program recipients navigate their solar and battery storage system by responding to their questions and conduct a home site visit if needed.
    • Coordinate with SUN staff and local storage partner on battery appliance bulk deliveries from equipment manufacturer and verify equipment deliveries and storage on site
    • Be on-site at pick-up locations to manage distribution of battery appliances to recipients, including record keeping, sharing educational information, and schedule any follow-up home visits for those who need it.
    • Pickup and deliver battery appliance units from storage location directly to recipients, as needed.
    • Conduct home visits on an as-needed basis for battery appliance recipients to help with battery appliance placement and setup.
    • Conduct follow-up phone calls, texts, and emails for each battery participant to ensure units are setup and working properly
    • Liaise with nonprofit partners and applicants to the program when in-person SUN representation is required

    Qualifications:

    • Resident of Ellis County
    • Certificate of Insurance (COI) for General Liability and Hired and Non-Owned Auto (HNOA) insurance prior to contract start date
    • Ability to travel in Ellis County, must possess a valid driver license, and have insured reliable transportation (vehicle)
    • Own a personal laptop or have access to a laptop
    • Basic tech proficiency with Google Suite, spreadsheets, CRM systems and email
    • Experience with community outreach and engagement
    • Comfortable engaging diverse stakeholders and disseminating complex information in an accessible way
    • Must be able to lift 50 lbs above your head for placement on top of a refrigerator.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Spanish fluency
    • Experience working with nonprofits
    • Solar and battery storage knowledge

    The 1099 contractor is expected to maintain their own personal health insurance and present COI and HNOA coverage prior to start date.
