Hours: 20 per week

Compensation: $28,000 - $30,000 annually

Start Date: TBD, preferably between August 15 and August 31, 2025

Position Overview

The Sunday School Director plays a vital role in cultivating an affirming, joyful, and justice-rooted spiritual environment for Judson’s children, youth, and families. This person will develop and lead a progressive, inclusive, and interspiritual children’s ministry, working with volunteers, caregivers, and staff to nurture young people’s spiritual formation in alignment with the values of our church.

Key Responsibilities

• Design & Implement Curriculum: Develop and/or adapt progressive, inclusive curriculum that draws on Christian stories, interspiritual wisdom, and themes of justice, compassion, and creativity
• Volunteer/Hourly Teacher/Caregiver Coordination: Recruit, train, and support a diverse team of Sunday School volunteers and/or hourly workers, ensuring that every class is safely and lovingly led and that nursery caretaking is covered for infants and toddlers
• Lead Sunday Service Programming: Be present and lead or oversee children’s programming during Sunday services
• Lead Youth/Teen Group Programming: Develop and spearhead a regular youth cohort gathering for service and community-building activities
• Community Outreach/Congregational Engagement: Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers to build trust and invite collaboration in faith formation and play a vital role in congregational growth through outreach to children, youth, and families with children and youth
• Special Events & Milestones: Plan occasional intergenerational services, family events, and rites of passage (e.g., welcome ceremonies, coming-of-age moments), and develop an annual retreat for youth/teens
• Pastoral Support for Kids: Create a trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+ affirming, anti-racist space where all children feel seen, celebrated, and safe
• Administration: Maintain attendance, ensure compliance with safety policies, manage supplies and budget in collaboration with church leadership, particularly with the Senior Minister and Sunday School Committee

Qualifications

• Deep respect for children’s and teens’ innate wisdom and creativity
• Commitment to progressive theology, interfaith dialogue, LGBTQIA+ celebration, decolonized practices, racial justice, and open-minded, open-hearted spiritual exploration
• Experience in children’s education, ministry, or spiritual formation (volunteer or professional)
• Strong organizational and communication skills
• Ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with volunteers, staff, and families
• Familiarity with and/or openness to child-centered pedagogies like Godly Play, Spirit Play, Our Whole Lives, or other curriculums
