The 19th News is hiring a full stack engineer to build products and internal tools in support of our mission to empower those we serve — particularly women, women of color and the LGBTQ+ community — with the information, resources and community they need to be equal participants in our democracy.

As one of two full stack engineers, you will collaborate with product managers, designers and stakeholders to maintain and improve reliability, security, performance, accessibility, usability and privacy. You’ll regularly pivot between writing code for website features to automating a manual data process to upgrading our systems to the latest security standards.

The 19th uses a mix of third-party and homegrown technologies, including: a custom WordPress website and content management system, servers and infrastructure managed by WPVIP, Virtuous CRM, Fundraise Up, various integration and project management tools, and standalone full stack applications to gather and analyze internal business data.

    Responsibilities

    • Write high-quality code for website and CMS features, devops and internal data tools, distribution feeds and integrations with vendors
    • Manage and maintain technical infrastructure for various applications
    • Uphold and improve code quality through code reviews, automated testing and other best practices
    • Respond promptly to technical emergencies during (and, on infrequent occasions, outside of) typical business hours
    • Collaborate with product managers and designers to refine product requirements and translate them into technical solutions
    • Communicate constraints, tradeoffs, level of effort, timelines and other considerations that impact scope and delivery time
    • Break down large technical projects into discrete tasks
    • Evaluate third-party technologies for reliability, solution fit, maintenance, security, accessibility and privacy concerns
    • Pitch opportunities to improve the performance, security, privacy, accessibility and reliability of our products and internal tools
    • Write and maintain technical and end-user documentation

    Non-essential functions (as capacity permits)

    • Participating in culture building, inclusive decision making and bringing ideas to different parts of our work to help us improve as an organization, such as by helping onboard new team members or participating in our hiring process.
    • Participating in team, organizational and individual relationship building, and professional development throughout the year.

    Relevant skills

    • 5+ years of experience building cross-platform web applications using web standards
    • Technical expertise in:
      • front-end skills, including JavaScript, Sass and HTML
      • back-end skills, including in PHP or comparable languages, data management and data sanitization
      • writing complex SQL queries for analytics dashboards
      • analytics platforms such as Google Analytics, Parse.ly and Google Tag Manager
      • optimizing for Core Web Vitals
      • metadata for search engines and internal analytics tools
      • source code management in Git
      • unit testing and test frameworks
    • Technical familiarity with:
      • custom WordPress theme development, including the use of Advanced Custom Fields, other plugins and templating languages such as Twig
      • databases and APIs, including integrating third-party technologies into WordPress
      • server and CDN settings, including how they impact user experience, security and performance
      • package managers like npm and Composer to optimize performance and reduce conflicts between dependencies
    • Experience collaborating with product managers and designers throughout the product development process, including translating Figma designs into high-quality web features
    • Experience evaluating third-party technologies for reliability, solution fit, maintenance, security, accessibility and privacy concerns
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to communicate complex ideas and problems in a way that is accessible to those unfamiliar with the project or technology. Comfort communicating directly with stakeholders and partners.
    • Track record of meeting deadlines and managing multiple projects at once
    • Effectiveness working in small teams and with a variety of technologies and technical problems on a regular basis

We know there are great candidates who might not check all these boxes or who possess important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We also encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
