    Agency Overview:

    The West Seattle Food Bank (WSFB) is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to strengthen the community through the power of neighbors helping neighbors, working to ensure all in our community have access to the essential necessities of living. The agency was established in 1983 and in March of 2020 merged with the West Seattle Helpline (WSH) to expand services.

    Primary services include distribution of food, financial assistance, clothes, and referrals for additional services and resources. The agency serves 1,500- 2,000 households every week in the West Seattle community

    Position Overview and Job Description:

    The Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator reports to the Development Director and works closely with program staff to support effective service delivery and meaningful community engagement.

    This role serves as the primary staff lead for volunteer recruitment, onboarding, training, and engagement across multiple programs and sites. In addition, this position leads community-facing engagement efforts including coordinating community food drives, supporting outreach through tabling at resource fairs and community events, and strengthening relationships with volunteers, partners, and supporters.

    This role is part of the Development team and plays an important role in building and sustaining community connection to WSFB’s mission.

    The Coordinator will also support the ongoing development and improvement of volunteer systems, practices, and partnerships to ensure volunteers are effectively integrated into WSFB’s work.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    Volunteer Recruitment & Management

      • Serve as the primary point of contact for all volunteers from initial inquiry through program placement.
      • Recruit, onboard, and place volunteers across WSFB programs and events.
      • Provide orientation to WSFB’s mission, expectations, and core safety guidelines, ensuring volunteers are prepared for service.
      • Collaborate with program managers and team leads who oversee day-to-day supervision and role-specific training to ensure alignment and support.
      • Strengthen systems and processes for volunteer engagement, ensuring clarity, consistency, and a positive experience across programs.
      • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment that supports volunteer retention and long-term engagement.
      • Address volunteer concerns and provide coaching or guidance when needed, in partnership with program managers and team leads, using professionalism, empathy, and clear expectations.
      • Support coordination of ongoing training opportunities (e.g., safety, de-escalation, best practices) in partnership with program staff.
      • Maintain accurate volunteer records, scheduling, and communications using database and office systems.
      • Track participation and support basic reporting needs for internal planning and external communications.
      • Develop and update volunteer materials, orientation content, and guidance documents.

    Corporate & Group Volunteer Engagement

      • Coordinate and support corporate and group volunteer opportunities, ensuring experiences are well-organized and meaningful.
      • Serve as a point of contact for corporate partners in collaboration with Development staff.
      • Help design and facilitate one-time and recurring group service opportunities.
      • Support alignment between volunteer engagement and broader community partnerships and fundraising strategies.

    Community Food Drive and Outreach Coordination

      • Serve as the primary coordinator for community food drives hosted by individuals, businesses, schools, and community groups.
      • Build and maintain relationships with food drive partners to encourage repeat engagement and deeper connection to WSFB.
      • Provide guidance, materials, and support to food drive hosts (e.g., barrels, signage, wish lists, timelines).
      • Coordinate logistics with Operations including drop-offs, pickups, and internal distribution.
      • Track participation and results to support reporting, storytelling, and future outreach.
      • Coordinate WSFB presence at community events, resource fairs, and partner gatherings.
      • Recruit, train, and support volunteers to staff outreach tables.
      • Represent WSFB in the community with warmth, clarity, and mission alignment
      • Ensure outreach materials are current, accessible, and aligned with organizational messaging.

    Program & Organizational Support

      • Answer phones and support front-line communication in coordination with Development staff.
      • Provide logistical support for events, fundraising activities, and organizational initiatives.
      • Provide program support in the food bank and Clothesline as needed.
      • Collaborate across departments to ensure volunteer and outreach efforts align with program needs.
      • Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Requirements:

      • Demonstrated experience in volunteer coordination, community engagement, or related people-centered work.
      • Experience working in a social service, nonprofit, or community-based environment serving diverse populations.
      • Ability to build trust and maintain positive relationships across a wide range of backgrounds and lived experiences.
      • Demonstrated ability to navigate sensitive or emotionally charged situations with professionalism, empathy, and sound judgment.
      • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
      • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
      • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Drive, & SharePoint and ability to learn new systems quickly.
      • Fluency in English required; multilingual skills strongly preferred, especially Spanish or other languages that reflect the communities we serve.
      • Valid Washington State driver’s license, access to a reliable vehicle, and proof of insurance.

    Preferred Qualifications:

      • Experience managing volunteers across multiple programs or sites.
      • Experience coordinating community outreach, events, or partnerships.
      • Experience working with corporate volunteer groups or community partnerships.
      • Familiarity with CRM or volunteer management systems.

    Physical Requirements:

      • Ability to lift of up to 35 pounds.
      • Ability to sit and stand and move for extended periods throughout the workday.

    Wages and Hours:

    $30-33/hour DOE, 40 hours/week, non-exempt; some evenings and weekends required.
