    WHO WE ARE

At New Disabled South (501c3), we are building a coalition across the South that centers the needs and daily experiences of disabled people. Our mission is to improve the lives of disabled people and cultivate strong disability rights and disability justice frameworks in the South. We do this by:

    • Organizing our communities around the most critical issues we face
    • Tracking legislation and policy that directly affects disabled people and educating our communities on its impacts
    • Advancing legislative priorities that center our wellbeing and liberation
    • Leading research on key issues
    • Changing media and social narratives about disabled people

Through this work, we impact the allocation of resources in our states, increase our collective power, and make this country a better place for us to live. We do this all with the lives and experiences of disabled people at the center (nothing about us without us).

    Requirements

    WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, New Disabled South is seeking a skilled and values-aligned Grantwriter Contractor to support our growing development efforts. This role will be responsible for crafting compelling proposals, letters of inquiry, and grant reports that clearly articulate the mission, impact, and funding needs of New Disabled South and its programs. The ideal candidate is a strong storyteller and strategist with deep familiarity with nonprofit fundraising and a commitment to social justice, disability rights, and racial equity.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Research, draft, and edit grant proposals, letters of inquiry (LOIs), concept notes, and funder reports.
    • Collaborate with staff to gather programmatic data, stories, and financial information needed for submissions.
    • Maintain consistent messaging that reflects New Disabled South’s voice, values, and mission.
    • Track deadlines, submission dates, and reporting requirements
    • Tailor proposals to align with funders’ priorities and guidelines.
    • Assist in prospecting and identifying new funding opportunities as needed.
    • Incorporate feedback and revisions from NDS staff and funders in a timely and professional manner.

    SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

    • Demonstrated success writing funded grants for nonprofit organizations, especially in the fields of social justice, disability rights, racial equity, or community organizing.
    • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with keen attention to detail.
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple projects.
    • Comfort working remotely, independently, and collaboratively.
    • Commitment to the mission and values of New Disabled South, including disability justice, racial justice, and power-building.

DO YOU THINK THIS MIGHT BE YOU?

If you see yourself in this job description but don’t feel like you meet every single criterion, we encourage you to apply anyway! Research shows that individuals from historically marginalized groups tend to self-select out of opportunities at higher rates. We take a holistic approach to all of our hiring practices and want to hire those who best align with our mission and goals.

New Disabled South is an equal opportunity employer to all regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, marital status, disability, religious or political affiliation, actual or perceived gender identity, age or sexual orientation. We encourage those who identify as disabled to apply.
